We've decided to one-up Netflix and chill with — what else? — wine. Here’s the first instalment, featuring new Netflix originals paired with our favourite new vino releases. Ready to binge?

Watch: The Politician | Drink: Austrian riesling

Netflix’s new political satire, The Politician, stars Tony Award-winner Ben Platt (of Dear Evan Hansen fame) as a wealthy high school senior whose sole ambition in life is to become President of the United States. It’s got a stacked cast, featuring Zoey Deutch, Gwyneth Paltrow, Lucy Boynton, January Jones, and the straight-up legendary Jessica Lange – who naturally steals every scene she’s in. Although it’s billed as a comedy, it wields a dark-ish sensibility as it navigates subject matter including suicide, sexuality, and illness.

It’s this light-yet-serious tone that makes The Politician perfect Netflix fare alongside an equally balanced, zingy-yet-weighty Austrian riesling like the Allram Strass Riesling 2018.

Watch: El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie | Drink: Primitivo

Breaking Bad’s back! Sans Bryan Cranston, but beggars can’t be choosers. Picking up right where the show left off, El Camino follows Aaron Paul’s Jesse Pinkman in the aftermath of the events of the series finale. The plot’s been kept pretty tightly under wraps, but it’s safe to say it’ll include a fair amount of action and...meth, probably.

As for the wine pairing? Let’s go for something just as juicy and explosive as the return of one of TV’s all-time best shows. Our pick: Italian primitivo (aka zinfandel). Not quite as potent as Breaking Bad’s drug of choice, but definitely better for your health. We’ll take it.

Watch: The Laundromat | Drink: A South American red blend

The Laundromat stars Meryl Streep, which is all most of us need to know to immediately pop it on the watch list. But for the rest of you: she plays the widowed Ellen Martin, who gets swindled out of her insurance money by a sneaky pair of lawyers in the form of Gary Oldman and Antonio Banderas.

A directorial turn from the iconic Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s Eleven, Erin Brockovich, Magic Mike) and supporting appearances from Sharon Stone, David Schwimmer, James Cromwell, Will Forte, and Chris Parnell (seriously, how much cash does Netflix have?!) round out a truly all-star crew and cast that can only be viewed alongside their wine counterpart: an all-star red blend. We’ve got just the ticket, with this bold-as-brass malbec-syrah-cabernet franc number from Mendoza.

Watch: Dolemite Is My Name | Drink: Top tier Champagne

Yet another loaded cast comes together in Dolemite Is My Name, a biopic starring Eddie Murphy in the titular role alongside Keegan-Michael Key, Mike Epps, Craig Robinson, Wesley Snipes, T.I., Chris Rock, and Snoop Dogg. Damn!

Dolemite represents a comeback of sorts for Murphy, who plays Rudy Ray Moore, a filmmaker and comedian whose alter-ego, Dolemite, established him as one of the pioneers of the blaxploitation film canon. We might not be able to pair this dram-edy with Snoop’s favourite leaf — but we’ll see that and raise you this opulent Champagne from Nicolas Maillart.

Watch: Living With Yourself | Drink: French bubbly

Two Paul Rudds for the price of one Netflix subscription! (Or free, since we’re all using someone else’s account anyway, amirite?)

This eight-episode comedy series features Rudd as a down-in-the-dumps dude who voluntarily undergoes a procedure that claims it’ll ‘rebuild your DNA better than ever’ and make you ‘a better you.’ But what actually happens? The procedure makes a whole new Rudd, who replaces him in his own life.

Sound like a bit of a mind bender? Good, because our pairing happens to be the vino version of just that. Check out the cosmic label on this rad French bubbly, and down a couple of glasses while you give Living With Yourself a good binge-watch.
