Raymond Usseglio reds have a lovely chinotto, orange peel and molasses theme that ties them together, as well as a certain suavity and collectedness. Black and red fruit chorus, of course - fresh herbs too, and a little bit chocolatey - but it’s more than that. The palate has weighty presence, bold but smooth, silky tannins and time to spare in bottle. It’s lovely and fresh now, but you may need a rare steak to counter those tannins, depending on your sensibility. No complaints.

This is glorious, with a slick pinot noir-like quality on top of its clear, rustic nero d’avola character. All of that’s down to terroir, no question. Old organic vines lend the wine an intensity rarely seen in this variety, and an ethereal nature to match. As easygoing as you like, with as much complexity as you could ask for. As an example, we took this to play Finska at the local park with some spicy sandwiches and it was still the star of the show on a warm day, despite the readily accessible pinot grigio in the bottle next door. This is the top end of town for nero d’avola, and you’re paying a pittance for VIP access.

The 2016 vintage of this wine was the first wine from this producer to hit our shores, and we’re just as excited about bringing this vintage into the country. On the back of the triple 95 point 2016, this fresh release maintains the richness of a grenache or even a cooler climate shiraz, but brings its own unique flavours. Dark, rich, ripe red berries, currants and beautiful cleansing acidity. So it’s a richer, riper style of wine, and it has a lot of up front fruit but it also has some beautiful acidity to cleanse the palate. And since you’re in Northern Italy, you’re in truffle country and you can’t go wrong with truffles. Gamey meats like venison would do really well too – simple cooking and crack a bottle of this, you’ll be rapt.

Old vine

This old vine goodness from one of Spain’s finest makers is exactly what you’re after - if you’re after a red that smells like Cherry Ripe meets river stone and has a silky fullness that has to be tasted to believe. I know I am. This is a very friendly, juicy and downright delicious welcome to the mencia variety, and you can enjoy these prices while they last. Not long before Bierzo reds go bezerko. Buy this, and you’re basically the Warren Buffet of the wine world, but you get to reap the profits on your taste buds.

This is a carnival of a wine. Ripe, juicy Grenache makes up the majority of the blend, with a splash of Carignan added for a spicy backbone of structure. Intensely coloured, and even more intensely flavoured. We’re talking ladlefuls of Spanish vitality and vigour. Old vines under a hot Catalan sun are a devilishly effective recipe. It’s a lip-smacker, and you’ll be doing so with every generous swig. To be enjoyed with rustic food on a balmy night of music and dancing. The winery themselves describe it as “agreeable”. Understatement of the millenium!

Decanter World Wine Awards 2018
Platinum - Best in Show: Value Best in Show Decanter World Wine Awards 2018

Every wondered what Portugal does other than Port? How about we start with Decanter’s 2018 Best in Show red, then... yes, this will do nicely. This is a blend of the four classic Port grapes, and it’s as dense as it is approachable. Dark and deep but fresh and friendly. Loads of plum, black and red berry, molasses and just enough spice. The finish is long enough to show its class and deceptively silky enough to make it dangerously sessionable. Who needs oak when the fruit is this good?
