Why do we love this case?

The battle’s on, mofos. Lines have been drawn, sides chosen. In the Red Corner: Old World. The OG winemaking countries that have millenia of practice under their belts. In the (other) Red Corner: New World. The plucky pretenders that are hell-bent on shaking things up. Who will win? Only you can decide!

Every case contains ONE of each of the following:

This Bordeaux, hailing from the Margaux appellation, is a cab-merlot blend with a touch of cab franc and a whole lotta charm. With a massive 97 points from DWWA, it’s an awesome expression of the area and anyone who loves Margaux will love this. This wine is fresh and elegant, with the right amount of tannin soaking up delicious plum fruit. It’s juicy, full of red and black fruits and will go down an absolute treat with any of your favourite meats. Grab it for a special dinner with a special someone (or anyone really). It’ll please ’em all.

The 2017 vintage was not without its challenges for Barolo. But the top producers were able to craft incredible wines and this comes across so clearly in Ettore Germano’s Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba. In the glass, the colour is a bright ruby garnet. The nose opens up quickly with strawberry, cherry, pomegranate and rose petals. After the few years it already has had in bottle, hints of leather and tobacco have integrated with the dark fruits evident on the palate. The tannins are fine, readily present and elegant. Ettore Germano is one of the most exciting Italian producers we’ve imported to date. If you are into Barolo, this is certainly a must have.

Lou Miranda Estate Golden Lion Reserve Shiraz 2018

Bold

Last year we were lucky enough to get our hands on the Golden Lion RESERVE shiraz from Lou Miranda. We thought it was a rare occasion, but we’ve played our cards right and are ecstatic to bring you the 2018. It’s an equally as excellent wine that feels kinda like welding a jet engine to the back of their regular shiraz. Power and other-worldly levels of deliciousness. In the glass, the colour is a deep crimson red and there’s lifted aromas of plum, pepper, vanilla and dark chocolate. The palate is full and generous with dark fruits, interwoven spice and savoury tannins. Lou Miranda has included American oak in the ageing regime on this, adding a touch of coconut and further vanilla to the wine. It’s ready to go with a big ole’ steak right now or will happily nap in your cellar for 15 years. This big boy is here for you now and in the future.

Wild Earth are a solid mofo favourite and absolute darlings of the wine press too. They craft exceptional wines year after year and 2019 is no exception. From a ripping Bannockburn single site in Central Otago, this wine has everything: elegance, grace, poise, power. There is a seductive bouquet of black fruits on the nose, with a touch of the tertiary mushroom complexity. Expect dark cherry, plum and thyme on the plate, this has it all in check, composed and confident. Whether you’re looking to impress at a dinner party next week or hide a few bottles away - this is the pinot for the job.

Pierre Doreau returned to Burgundy in the late 19th century to replant a vineyard destroyed by phylloxera. Several generations later, the family has expanded their holdings and still works to produce wines in a sustainable manner. Everything is done manually and organic were at all possible. ‘Monthelie’ is a wine on the rounder side, quite floral, and even a touch leathery. Blackberry and allspice lead the charge but the structure and minerality of the wine are what really make it stand out.

Five Red Star Halliday Rated Winery
Mofo Fave Producer

Like most Margaret River wineries, Flametree is best known for its chardonnay, cabernet and cabernet blends. If you are a regular here at the ‘Fo, you’ve seen the chardonnay and cabernet from several vintages. We’ve now made the cab merlot another regular, with this being our second vintage of it. Flametree has thrown in small bits of malbec and petit verdot as well, making this truly a Bordeaux-style blend. It’s full of ripe fruit like blackberry, cassis and red currants, all supported by hints of cocoa, earthiness and fine tannins. You can drink this the moment it arrives at your door or try to be patient for up to 10 years. Good luck with that!
