New World vs Old World - Whites Edition 3.0
- Mixed
- Various
Better than a face off between Travolta and Cage, this is a battle of wine worlds. New vs Old, to be exact. Stepping into the ring for the newbies are the indomitable South Africa and Australia (of course). Â Old World is represented by France, a likely contender, and white wine powerhouse Austria . Who shall win? Your palate decides.Â
Each case contains ONE bottle of each of the following:

This is another gem from our favourite Austrian producer Allram. Riesling from the Premier Cru Gaisberg site in Kamptal - made with TLC and a lot of know-how. Gaisberg is a cool site and the resulting wine has drive, and then some. They have used a bit of skin contact in the winemaking process which has added texture to the wine - and have left the faintest (4.5 grams) of residual sugar to balance that driving acidity. Lovers of top-shelf Clare or Grosses Gewachs - this is one for you. Beautifully elegant, dry and layered riesling. It is an absolute delight.

For fans of classic Margaret River chardonnay, it doesnât get much better than this. This is the reserve wine from Flametree, one of the best producers in the region. It bursts with grapefruit, lemon rind, cashew, struck match and stonefruit. Powerful, complex and long-lived to boot. The 2020 is a brand new release, but based on the quality of the vintage and the performance of previous vintages in the reviews, we expect this to get upper, upper 90âs scores from all the critics.

If wines like the Heritage Vineyard from Settlement in Marlborough are any indication, Iâd say itâs a region to watch for fine wine. Sure - they make a ripper sauv to drink icy cold with mates - but itâs wines like this that show what the region is really capable of. Farming is organic, vines are 30+ year and wines are made with care. Thereâs a citrus drive to the wine with lime and grapefruit, followed by guava, kiwi and pineapple. These bold fruit flavours are underpinned by minerality and a lingering finish.

Not only did Luca Maroni dish out 98 points to this chardy, he also called it âone of the best Italian white wines of the year.â Always one for Italian flair, weâd take Mr Maroni with a pinch of truffle salt â but it is a very, very good wine. With aromas of cloves, vanilla, passionfruit and pineapple, this chardy has great balance and plump stonefruit flavours. Itâs fresh and elegant with the fruit flavours persisting throughout the finish, and has a sparkly little gold medal to boot. One of the richest, tastiest Italian exports to come through our doors lately, this is not one to be missed.

Domaine Gayda started as a staging post for weary travellers and their horses all the way back in 1749. In 2004, the property was converted into a winery, accommodation and restaurant. They source grapes from throughout the Languedoc region to make wines in both traditional and modern styles. Tâair Dâoc loosely translates to âyou look goodâ and thatâs pretty accurate when describing this sauv blanc. It boasts tropical fruits and citrus on the nose, a bright fruity palate and wonderful crispness on the finish. Vivid and delicious (and vegan friendly too!).

Fresh from the the Eden Valley comes another vintage of the Spring Hill by Irvine. Irvine is a producer you can trust to bring the quality, year after year crafting aromatic whites and powerful reds. Eden Valley riesling seems to champion those lovely floral aromatics, inviting us to taste. Crunchy green apples abound alongside typical lemon and lime zest. Mouth watering acidity provides excellent length and genuine value for money. Speaking of dishes, this wine is best consumed with spicy seafood and a handful of your closest friends and family.
