To get an idea of the ethos behind the wines of Neck of the Woods, here’s the opening line from their website - ‘We’re not interested in making mass produced sh*t. We believe in bold tastes and bolder characters.’ These are small batch wines made with minimal intervention that fully embrace the wildness of Central Otago. Their pinot was hand-harvested from two sites a week apart to achieve optimal ripeness. The batches were fermented separately but with partial whole bunches before spending 11 months in 28% new French oak. A final blending was then done right before bottling. What’s in the bottle is soft, yet engulfing with a profile of blackcurrant, plum and allspice. No matter where your palate lies, this is one that’ll show up right in your neck of the woods.

Auntsfield were Marlborough’s first vineyard and winery, established back in 1873. Their single vineyard wines are all grown at the estate with meticulous care, hand picked, hand sorted, carefully done to gently extract those delightful flavours and tannins so associated with pinot noir. What flavours you ask? All the ripe berries, black cherries and plums and a touch of dark chocolate and cigar, a true expression of what Marlborough terroir can offer for pinot noir.

This is one of the top pinots of an absolute mofo fave - Wild Earth. They are not only one of our favourites, but a darling of the wine media who absolutely love them. The best grapes from vineyards in the renowned Bannockburn area are the ingredients for this wine, along with a modest 22% new oak that’s judicious use really let’s the fruit shine. And shine it does - cherry and plum abound in vibrant spades, complimented by incense, cedar and wild thyme. All of the reviews mention the well-handled and abundant tannins - so get this wine into a decanter for the best experience.

This pinot never fails to impress and as Sam Kim, NZ wine critic cites it’s “elegant, stylish and flavoursome at the same time.” This ‘fo favourite pinot beautifully expresses the terroir of Marlborough, plush and robust. Each glass is a microcosm of soil and climate, mixed with hard work and care, that’s the winemakers part of it. The result of this aged beauty is “dark cherry, plum and mixed spice characters with nuances of cedar and dried herbs. It is ripe and finely textured on the palate, and offers delicate fruit intensity together with savoury complexity, enhanced by smooth mouthfeel and polished tannins.” so says Sam Kim, and Sam tastes a lot of wine, heck it’s his profession, he would know what complexity tastes like.

We're going to let Sam Kim do the talking here... "Wonderfully ripe and splendidly complex, the bouquet shows dark cherry, olive, roasted nut, mushroom and floral aromas. It's equally satisfying on the palate displaying impressive concentration and flow, beautifully complemented by plush texture and fine polished tannin. Stylish and sophisticated. At its best: now to 2032." There you have it!

Crafted by boutique winery Brightwater from their little patch of paradise in the Nelson region, this is a pretty wonderful pinot noir. The sunshine and sea breezes of the region produce beautifully balanced fruit that is harnessed in elegant wines. The wine is bursting with aromas of bright cherries and plums that play with floral, gamey notes. Dangerously drinkable, the palate is vibrant, juicy and smooth.
