This is some super concentrated, sweet-sour raspberry and licorice juice here. As impressive in the glass as the bottle is. It’s got rippling, cheek-ripping tannins too, that ride like sumptuous sandpaper down the tongue. So yes, it needs some time, but it’s still effing delicious, and with much future promise. This, is the Lafont of youth. And it’s gooood.

Richer than your average CDR (that’s industry-speak for Côtes du Rhône, just so you’re up with the lingo), this has all the black fruits and spices, plus a bunch of flowers and a delicate salinity. Soft tannins and well-judged balance speak of this winery, a fortified farm that had already gained a reputation for great wines by the 17th century. The wine reveals its secrets as gently but as assuredly as the site itself. You need to go down a mottled, tree-lined alley amid the vineyard rows, and then the Château sprawls ahead, stone buildings protected by thick walls. Despite the fortified appearance, there’s an open invitation to travellers and tasters, and the elegant, generous wines within.

Wines from the Côtes du Rhône may just be the official sponsors of good times. There are many strings to their bow (it’s looking more like a harp at this point), but what they do best is fun, juicy delightfulness. Here’s an example with spicy ripe cherries, crunchy blackberries and a fine structure that gently gives the juice shape. It’s long and pleasantly round, with some very fine tannins. It’s also organically grown and hand-harvested from very old terraced vineyards on pebbly soils. A red that’s delicious on its own, or that does poultry and white meats best. The toughest part of the whole experience is the cork, and that’s not stopping anyone.

This wine is from the glorious, contemporary Château Sixtine, and is the little sibling to their incredible Châteauneuf-du-Pape - in price, at least. The term ‘Villages’ always makes me think it’s something lesser, when in fact it’s superior, with stricter rules around its designation. More time and money thrown its way. Not that you’d really associate all that love with this kind of price point, all the way from France. But here we are, with a juicy, very French but modern and vivacious, blue-black-red-fruited expression of all that’s good in the Rhône. Guigal used to be my go-to. No more.

French import

This is from Famille Perrin, an organically certified family producer. All that care and attention makes for a bottleful of pure flavour and authentic feel. It’s a blend of grenache blanc, marsanne, rousanne and viognier, as is required for whites of the region. The result is beautifully lifted and floral on the nose, with delicious spice and pithy aromas. It’s rich, round and tangy on the palate, sumptuously fruity and distinctly Mediterranean. It’s a white for all seasons, with summery fruit flavour being delightful in hot weather, and the chewy richness proving perfect for the cold.
