These six represent a wide variety of styles, from the ever-famous tempranillo to the always-delicious grenache. They’re aged and ready to go, but there’s aeons of life in them yet, so no rush.
Every case contains ONE of each of the following:

1x Bodegas Ondarre Mayor de Ondarre Reserva 2017
Red — Tempranillo
Rioja — Spain
It is only in years with grapes of exceptional quality that a limited number of bottles of Mayor de Ondarre Rioja Reserva are produced. From two plots of old vines, the grapes are handpicked into small crates and then sorted to ensure only the best quality fruit makes the blend. 19 months in oak casks and a further couple of years in bottle have resulted in the complete and luscious wine we bring you today. This wines might make you feel somewhat wild and dangerous, with lush, complex dark fruit abound. The long palate is entwined with smokey, spicy characteristics, giving way to the undeniable quality of Rioja terroir and fruit. Something about it is like eating a michelin star meal in your trackies- instantly comfortable yet luxurious.
You’d pay $180 full price.

1x Bodegas Olarra Cerro Añón Reserva 2018
Red — Tempranillo
Rioja — Spain
As you may know, there’s some serious rules around making a Rioja wine. Yes, there’s ageing stipulations for minimum ageing and time in oak (in this case a combination of 65% American oak and 35% new French Allier barriques), but also on the calibre of the fruit itself. You know what you’re getting is certified quality; and that’s before Olarra have even had the chance to make their mark on it. This wine was picked on the riper side, so there is an abundance of juicy fruit character balancing the sweet and spicy oak. At five years old, all elements are starting to harmonise and the oak tannin is slightly softening. The colour is vibrant ruby and the fruit is on the plush side, balanced by that tannin. Bloody hell, if we could drink wines like this every day we would be living a good life.

1x Bodegas Forcada 'Alma de Forcada' Old Vine Grenache 2019
Red — Grenache
Rioja — Spain
Old vine grenache from Rioja is a tempting prospect at the best of times, and when it tastes like this it’s damn near irresistible. Grown at 800m of elevation, that lofty position ensures freshness and liveliness to the fruit. Time (but not too long) in French and American oak have added power and warmth to the wine, but do not dominate. Ravishing cherries and blueberries dominate, backed by crackles of spice and a satisfying finish. Old grenache vines imbue a wine with a magic all its own, so long as you don’t get in the way. The magic is alive and well here.

1x El Rincón de los Enebros 2020
Red — Tempranillo
Rioja — Spain
Finca de la Rica , who make this wonderful wine, are one of our all time favourite Rioja producers. They work with around forty small plots of old vines across Rioja Alavesa and make small volumes of top-quality wine. El Rincón de Los Enebros is their take on a grenache-dominant blend, with tempranillo playing a supporting role. Anyone familiar with the region knows that old vine garnacha from Rioja can reach lofty heights of excellence and this wine certainly has some of that magic.
Part of the magic is the twelve months it spends in new American oak wrapped into the generous fruit and balanced by the fresh notes (likely from the tempranillo). It’s rich, powerful, and very silky - the fruit spectrum is blue and red (in abundance), and there are layers of toasty vanillin notes and baking spice. I’m going to take a punt and say that lovers of full-bodied reds from malbec to shiraz to Amarone will be delighted by this one.
You’d pay $75 full price.

1x El Buscador Crianza 2018
Red — Tempranillo
Rioja — Spain
This is top-notch Rioja. You can tell just by looking at it. It looks somehow livelier in the glass, more vital and intense. Tempranillo and garnacha make up the mix here, singing of juicy cherries and plums. Oak treatment comprises of a 80-20 French-American split, giving darker toasty notes and a background coconutty hint. The wine is deep and complex, but also fun and never too imposing. It’s suited to special occasions, but only the sort you actually enjoy. Let your hair down, and crack open this beauty of a bottle!
