Shiraz 2018
McLaren Vale, SA
96pts Sam Kim | 5 Stars Sam Kim | Vegan Friendly
This shiraz is from a dead-set McLaren mofo fave - a customer fave and a staff fave. We canāt reveal who they are, but we can say that they are famous for bold, firm and concentrated reds that are truely some of the best in the region.
This 2018 shiraz starts with blueberries and plums on the nose, followed by a pretty perfume. The palate is all McLaren with dense red and black fruit, richness and abundant tannin. Itās as intense, as complex, as high quality, as powerful as you are going to find, with all of that fruit supported by roasted nuts and spices, and super dark chocolate. The mouthfeel is indeed bold, but not overwhelming, as tannin dances with fruit, acidity, earthy notes and a long and moreish finish.

Australians have perfected the cab shiraz blend. Weāve also perfected innovation and a can-do spirit. So Ulithorne here has grabbed the best cabernet fruit from the best SA cabernet region (Coonawarra) to blend with the best old vine shiraz from their estate vineyard in McLaren Vale. The resulting wine is ripe, dark and peppery. Layered on top of beautifully integrated oak (16 months in a mix of French and American), youāll find blackcurrant, raspberry, plum, pepper and cinnamon. The tannins are silky and the finish lengthy, making for a spectacular example of the original Aussie red blend.

When a multi-generational family run Coonawarra winery offers up its reserve cabernets, you jump at it. Jim Brand is a powerhouse producer who does cab sav very, very well. This is leaning more towards medium-bodied but still exhibiting a concentrated fruit profile of cherry and cassis. Itās the grace and structure from the tannin and hints of cedar that really put it a step above. Nothing wrong with feeling a bit classy, is there?

Last year we were lucky enough to get our hands on the Golden Lion RESERVE shiraz from Lou Miranda. We thought it was a rare occasion, but weāve played our cards right and are ecstatic to bring you the 2018. Itās an equally as excellent wine that feels kinda like welding a jet engine to the back of their regular shiraz. Power and other-worldly levels of deliciousness. In the glass, the colour is a deep crimson red and thereās lifted aromas of plum, pepper, vanilla and dark chocolate. The palate is full and generous with dark fruits, interwoven spice and savoury tannins. Lou Miranda has included American oak in the ageing regime on this, adding a touch of coconut and further vanilla to the wine. Itās ready to go with a big oleā steak right now or will happily nap in your cellar for 15 years. This big boy is here for you now and in the future.

This shiraz from Irvine is fresh to Singapore. We have imported their Eden Valley shiraz in the past, with great success, but this is the first time for their Barossa. Irvineās shiraz is a prime example of the versatility that South Australia can offer with just one grape. Dense layers of plums and purple fruit jump out of the glass and promise richness and depth, yet its savoury and non-fruit characteristics of liquorice, soft spice and hard herbs are the star of the show. This 2019 has a full and velvety palate with a touch more richness than the Eden. Lovers of shiraz - rejoice!

This pan-South Aussie producer is fast becoming a mofo favourite, across their delicious red and white wines. They seek out parcels of quality grapes in Barossa, McLaren and on this case the maritime region of Langhorne Creek. Their wines are made to a high-standard across the range and are reliably delicious. This cabernet shows off a perfumed nose of flowers, juicy plums and dried herbs, followed by a medium-bodied, ripe and textured palate. Thereās a gentle earthiness in the wine that is wrapped in blackberries and a lingering olive tapenade finish.
