Domaine Nicolas Rossignol Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans Pinot Noir 2019
- Textured, savoury
Nicolas Rossignol was born to make Burgundian wine. Coming from a family of winemakers (5 generations) his curiosity for the land and its terroirs can be seen across his appellation wines. His experience has spanned across the Burgundy region, South Africa’s Franschhoek, the Medoc and Châteauneuf du Pape before returning to his home soils in Beaune. Domaine Nicolas Rossignol has expanded from just 3ha in 1997, to 17ha and 30 appellation labels today. If anyone knows how to extract every ounce of character from the regions of Burgundy, it’s Mr. Rossignol.
Volnay is often quite structured and austere, but this one has a bit more charm to it. The tannins are soft and there is an appealing minerality drawn from the chalky soil. There’s an array of red fruits, and not just your standard cherry and strawberry, either. Seriously perfumed, with violets and dare we say a little touch of rosehip. This is a great representation of how Burgundy can meld fruit and structure together in a seamless stylish blend.
“This is the first vintage of Mitans from Nico Rossignol, made with grapes from his uncle's vines. Located on clay soils, it's a parcel that coped well with the torrid conditions of 2018 to produce a wine that is supple, scented and well balanced, unfurling flavours of bramble, raspberry and watermelon on the palate, supported by vanilla spicy 20% new wood. A fine début.”
It’s cool, we get it, you want to know absolutely everything about this wine. Well here you go, go nuts.
