Reschke Empyrean Cabernet Sauvignon 2002
- Textured, savoury
- Coonawarra
Stand up and take notice, mofos! We have Reschke’s 19-year old vintage of a wine that Robert Parker considers to be the benchmark amongst Coonawarra cabernets. You won’t see this again, not here, not anywhere. I’ve tasted this exact wine a few times over the years and know that it’s not only in its drinking prime, but has a few years ahead of it. It’s that kind of wine...super dense with deeply concentrated fruit and a tannin structure to allow it to develop and mellow over a couple of decades. I’m not sure if we’ve ever had a wine with this much age and status before here at the ‘Fo. And I’m not sure we ever will again. What a find!

“Very attractive complex bouquet with powerful bottle age notes. Warming palate, rich with sweet berry flavours and quite strong tannin complexity. Long lingering finish.”
It’s cool, we get it, you want to know absolutely everything about this wine. Well here you go, go nuts.

Coonawarra = Cabernet. True in a sense, but also simplistic. Some of the best wine from the Coonawarra is Shiraz, which is frequently overlooked in the search for the perfect Cab Sav. Not to belittle Coonawarra Cab either, but it's funny how often we get caught insisting that one variety is the best expression of a specific place, grown in a variable environment with so many factors at play. All we're saying is: don't miss the great wines that aren't the usual suspects. Coonawarra has quite a few amazing hands other than their trump card.
