Five wines for Autumn sipping
Alright, we don’t know about you, but is that a chill in the air? That’s right, Autumn’s here, and with it here's our pick of the wines that will make the season a little more interesting, perfect for when the leaves start to turn and the air gets a little crisper.
Pinot noir
Classic pinot and golden autumnal arvos - name a better duo. With those typically light tannins, it’s still giving you that hint of summer with its delicate fruits, and bringing you through into winter with those more earthy, grounded notes that really start to come out in aged pinot. Plus, it’s versatile enough to pair with a range of autumnal dishes, from roast chicken, pork or veggies to borscht, soups and even if you’re just having snacks with a cheeseboard.
Cabernet sauvignon
Full-bodied, bold, juicy, and typically packed with notes of blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar, vanilla, plus more herbal-eucalypt notes too. Great for those chilly autumn nights when you're craving something more indulgent, rich and satisfying - especially as an accompaniment to a hearty steak.
Chardonnay
Two hills we're prepared to die on; one, that it’s perfectly fine to barbecue year round, and two, that white wine isn’t just for summer. But we get it, when you’re pulling on the chunky knitwear as the nights draw in, you want a white with a bit more body to cuddle up to. Our pick - opt for a chardy that’s seen a bit of toasty oak, and that pairs smoothly and beautifully with cheeses, creamy dishes, roasted poultry, hearty soups, and that crisp, Autumnal air.
Shiraz/syrah
Red fruit, spice and all things nice - you know it, you love it, we aren’t going to beat around the bush here. Shiraz is always welcome at the table, and radiates the warmth of the sunshine those little grapes collected all summer before they were picked in winter. Perfect for when the mercury is starting to drop, and you’re firing up the oven for a roast, well, anything.
Malbec
Last but not least, there’s the Mendoza marvel that’s malbec - a medium to full-bodied red with a rich, fruit profile that's packed with hints of blue and black fruits, chocolate and spice. It's perfect for pairing with autumn comfort food, from hearty stews to rich, savoury dishes. Our pick - spiced pork sausages, mashed potatoes and malbec. Tick, tick, boom.
