Why do we love this wine?

Although their work has been long-running, they have maintained small holdings of land which are all manually and organically cared for. The steep, south-east facing slopes of this Cornas vineyard gives life to a powerful wine that show the full spectrum of syrah; add in some whole-bunch fermentation, heavy extraction of the skins, and light influences from oak and you arrive at the Pur Granit. The minerality of the palate speaks of the terroir, with deep reaching blue fruits accentuated by the spicy and intensely structured finish. The Lionnet family have essentially crafted their own clone of syrah by this stage, something truly special to gawk at. You can search the world over, and you’ll never find anything like this beauty.

Part of our Women in Wine Collection

We are committed to ALWAYS having wines available that are made by women. Vinous

Vibrant, spice- and mineral-tinged dark berry and cherry aromas are complemented by suggestions of olive, licorice and pungent flowers. Energetic, appealingly sweet black and blue fruit and candied violet flavors deepen with air while a smoky mineral element adds lift and back-end cut. Velvety tannins add gentle grip to an impressively long, floral-driven finish that leaves a repeating floral note behind

Frequently Asked Questions

This Cornas showcases the unique granite terroir of the steep, south-east facing slopes that give the wine its name 'Pur Granit'. The Lionnet family has essentially developed their own clone of Syrah through decades of careful selection, combined with whole-bunch fermentation and heavy skin extraction techniques. The result is a wine with distinctive minerality that speaks directly of its terroir, creating something truly unique that you won't find replicated anywhere else in the world.

Under Corinne Lionnet's leadership, the estate's organic certification ensures that the vines express their terroir without chemical interference, allowing the granite soils to impart their full mineral character. The manual care of their small vineyard holdings means each vine receives individual attention, contributing to the wine's intense structure and complexity. This sustainable approach not only preserves the environment but also enhances the wine's ability to reflect its unique place of origin.

The wine's powerful structure and spicy finish make it an excellent match for rich, flavourful dishes like slow-braised lamb with herbs, grilled venison, or aged hard cheeses. The deep blue fruit flavours and mineral backbone can stand up to bold seasonings and robust cooking methods like barbecuing or roasting. Consider pairing it with dishes that incorporate earthy elements like mushrooms or root vegetables to complement the wine's granite-driven minerality.

The exceptional ratings (95pts Vinous, 96pts TastingBook) reflect the wine's perfect expression of Cornas terroir and the Lionnet family's masterful winemaking. Critics recognise the unique combination of power and finesse achieved through the estate's proprietary Syrah clone and traditional techniques like whole-bunch fermentation. The wine represents the pinnacle of what Cornas can achieve when traditional methods meet meticulous organic viticulture on ideal granite soils.

While this wine is drinking beautifully now, showing its full spectrum of Syrah characteristics, it has the structure and intensity to develop magnificently over the next 10-15 years. The heavy extraction and mineral backbone provide excellent ageing potential, allowing the spicy elements to integrate further and the blue fruit flavours to evolve into more complex secondary notes. For optimal enjoyment, consider cellaring until 2025-2030, though it will continue to reward patient collectors well beyond that.
