Why do we love this wine?

Love textural, cherried and silky smooth pinot? So do we. With no shortage of flavour, it is an intriguing wine to discover -  first showing off intense aromas; like five spice and clove, along with beautiful lifted strawberry and black cherry. The palate is generous, yet firm-edged with an inherent medium-body, slinky fun tannins and an interplay of light and shade. So if you want to be knocked out by beauty, look no further.

Frequently Asked Questions

Martinborough's unique terroir combines free-draining river terraces with a cool, dry climate that's ideal for Pinot Noir. The region's diurnal temperature variation helps preserve the delicate aromatics and natural acidity that make this Nga Waka expression so compelling. The area's reputation for producing some of New Zealand's finest Pinot Noir is evident in this wine's exceptional critic scores, including 97 points from Michael Cooper.

Serve this Pinot Noir slightly below room temperature at 14-16°C to highlight its silky texture and complex spice notes. The wine's medium body and slinky tannins make it perfect for decanting 30-60 minutes before serving, which will help integrate the five spice and clove aromatics with the cherry fruit. This approach allows the wine's inherent elegance and textural complexity to shine through.

The wine's five spice and clove notes make it exceptional with duck breast or lamb with herbs, while its earthy undertones pair beautifully with mushroom risotto or roasted root vegetables. The medium body and firm edge can handle richer preparations, but the lifted strawberry and cherry flavours also work wonderfully with salmon or tuna. Consider dishes that echo the wine's spice profile, such as Moroccan-inspired cuisine or Asian fusion.

This 2020 Pinot Noir is drinking beautifully now, showcasing its intense aromatics and generous palate at peak expression. However, given its exceptional quality ratings and firm-edged structure, it has excellent cellaring potential for 5-8 years. The wine's inherent balance between fruit intensity and structural elements suggests it will develop additional complexity while maintaining its signature silky texture and spice characteristics.

Nga Waka's approach emphasises textural elegance and aromatic complexity, evident in this wine's distinctive five spice and clove characteristics alongside classic Pinot fruit. Their style creates wines with what they call 'slinky fun tannins' - a playful yet sophisticated structure that balances intensity with drinkability. The consistent high ratings across multiple critics suggest a house style that successfully marries traditional Pinot Noir expression with unique aromatic signatures.
