Founded in the 19th century, Stags’ Leap is one of California’s oldest and most storied estates. This vintage shows off everything you’d expect from that prestige: depth, richness, and brawn in seamless harmony. Aromas of toasted oak, blackberry and cooked herbs lead the way, opening into a palate layered with dark fruits - black cherry, blueberry and cassis - alongside savoury notes of black olive, cocoa and espresso. Silky tannins carry through to a long, lingering finish.

Their wines speak for themselves with their cabernets sitting amongst the benchmarks of the region. This is classic Napa cabernet: bold, structured and age-worthy, yet polished enough to drink beautifully now. A wine to savour with rich food, share on special occasions, or cellar for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

Stags' Leap sits in its own sheltered valley within Napa, creating a unique microclimate that's cooler than surrounding areas due to afternoon fog from San Pablo Bay. This natural air conditioning allows the grapes to ripen slowly while retaining crucial acidity, resulting in wines with both power and elegance. The rugged, rocky soils force vines to dig deep for nutrients, concentrating flavours and creating the structured tannins that make these cabernets legendary.

This 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon has excellent aging potential of 15-20 years when stored properly in a cool, dark cellar. Napa Valley Cabernets from quality producers like Stags' Leap typically hit their stride around 5-8 years after vintage, when primary fruit flavours integrate with oak and develop complex secondary notes of leather, tobacco, and earth. The wine's full-bodied structure and natural acidity provide the backbone needed for extended cellaring.

The wine's rich black cherry and plum flavours make it perfect for red meat dishes like grilled ribeye, lamb shanks, or aged beef wellington. The full-bodied structure can stand up to bold flavours like blue cheese, while the redcurrant notes complement game meats beautifully. For vegetarian options, try it with mushroom risotto or grilled portobello steaks - the earthy elements will harmonise with the wine's Napa Valley terroir character.

Stags' Leap gained legendary status after their 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon shocked the wine world by beating prestigious Bordeaux wines in the famous 1976 Paris Tasting. This historic victory put Napa Valley on the global wine map and established the region's credibility for world-class Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery continues this tradition of excellence with their timeless winemaking approach, focusing on expressing their unique terroir rather than following trends.

This 2021 vintage is beautifully balanced to drink now while still young and vibrant, showcasing bright fruit flavours and polished tannins. However, it will reward patience - Napa Cabernets often develop greater complexity after 3-5 years as the tannins soften and secondary flavours emerge. If you're planning a special occasion soon, decant it for an hour to help it open up, or cellar it for a more evolved drinking experience in the future.
