Why do we love this case?

The St Émilion Gran Cru classification marks wines of excellence. This Gran Cru collection features wines of distinction that not only rise to the lofty expectations of their regionality but best them. If you are ever eyeing off a true 'unicorn wine' - something in the vein of Cheval Blanc or Petrus, then you're going to be shopping in Bordeaux and, specifically, the Right Bank of Bordeaux. That's where St Émilion resides, among the giants of the global vino landscape. The Right Bank's preference for merlot dominant blends over cab sauv dominant blends makes for wines that are luxurious, rich, powerful, and (importantly) approachable in youth.

2x Chateau Galius Saint-Emillon Grand Cru Merlot Blend 2020

Red — Merlot Blend

Bordeaux — France

In mofo history, we have never seen a wine fly out the door quite like this one. No exaggeration, never before has a wine been as loved by the mofo community. This Grand Cru Saint-Emilion is rich and ripe and at a magical point in its life, drinking very, very well. It’s a stunning example of how Bordeaux terroir shines through the merlot grape in all its generosity and finesse, with a touch of cab franc (15%) adding fresh notes to all that fruit. Expect an abundance of plums, vanilla and milk chocolate. Forest floor and herbal undergrowth are hidden softly underneath - sage and oregano, tobacco leaf. Spice ekes in around my edges, with broad, silky tannin riding on a backbone of bright acidity and keen structure. You can rest assured that you are going to be drinking the top-of-the-top of Bordeaux here.

You'd pay $90 full price.

2x Château le Loup Saint-Émilion Grand Cru 2021

Red — Merlot Blend

Bordeaux — France

If you’re the kind of wine buyer looking for the best wine at the best price, look no further. Saint-Émilion grand cru rarely ever starts at a price like this. Even we did a double take! With a super high average score among wine-loving Vivino users, it’s a ‘get it while it’s hot’ limited red. A classic right-bank blend of merlot and cabernet franc, expect an inky red in your glass. Plums and dark cherries intertwine with cedar, expanding with a richness that tapers to a classic finish. There is also an edge of earthy notes here, only found in wonderfully earnest Bordeaux. French oak and gravelly tannins, it has it all to keep you wanting more. Perfect to cellar, yet, even better to drink, after all, people say life is short. While we are here we may as well sip grand cru, live long and prosper. Château le Loup Saint-Émilion grand cru, we love you.

2x Château Hauts de Granget Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2019

Red — Merlot Blend

Bordeaux — France

We’re getting pretty good at finding exceptional Bordeaux at unbelievable pricing. Humble, I know. But sometimes it’s good to give yourself a little pat on the back. We think we earned it with this one. It’s Saint-Emilion Grand Cru composed of 85% merlot and 15% cab franc that’s hitting all the right notes. And we’re not the only ones that feel that way - this is a certified Mofo fave.

You'd pay $80 full price.

Frequently Asked Questions

St Émilion Grand Cru represents the pinnacle of Right Bank Bordeaux winemaking, where producers must meet stringent quality standards including lower yields and stricter vineyard management. These wines share terroir with legendary estates like Cheval Blanc and Petrus, benefiting from the region's unique limestone and clay soils that perfectly suit merlot cultivation. The Grand Cru classification ensures each bottle delivers the complexity and elegance that has made St Émilion one of the world's most revered wine regions for over a millennium.

Merlot's naturally softer tannin structure and earlier ripening characteristics create wines that are more accessible in their youth compared to the cabernet sauvignon-dominant Left Bank styles. The Right Bank's clay-rich soils enhance merlot's inherent plushness, producing wines with velvety textures and generous fruit flavours that don't require decades of cellaring to enjoy. This approachability doesn't compromise complexity - these wines still develop beautifully over time, but offer immediate pleasure alongside their ageing potential.

These St Émilion Grand Crus showcase the classic Right Bank profile of rich blood plum and cranberry fruits layered with sophisticated tertiary notes of cedar, leather, and spicebox. The medium-bodied structure carries smoky undertones and allspice complexity that reflects both the merlot grape's character and the region's distinctive terroir. The textured, savoury style indicates wines with excellent depth and the kind of mineral backbone that separates Grand Cru wines from simpler regional offerings.

The 2019, 2020, and 2021 vintages represent three distinct expressions of St Émilion's terroir, with 2019 offering more concentrated, structured wines from a challenging but ultimately successful harvest. The 2020 vintage is widely regarded as exceptional across Bordeaux, producing wines with perfect balance between power and elegance. Meanwhile, 2021 shows the region's ability to craft refined, aromatic wines even in cooler conditions, resulting in more lifted, perfumed styles that highlight the finesse possible in Grand Cru winemaking.

The beauty of merlot-dominant St Émilion Grand Crus lies in their dual nature - they're delicious now but will reward patience with additional complexity. Currently, these wines offer primary fruit flavours balanced with emerging secondary characteristics, making them perfect for immediate enjoyment with rich foods. However, proper cellaring for 5-15 years will allow the tannins to fully integrate and develop the tertiary leather, tobacco, and earthy notes that make aged Bordeaux so compelling.
