2x Domaine Yvet & Laurent Vocoret Vieilles Vignes Chablis AOC 2021

White — Chardonnay

Burgundy — France

I love Chablis for its consistent excellence, which is not something you always get from the revered regions of the wine world. Bordeaux is hit-and-miss, Rhone can underwhelm, but Chablis is forever. This doesn't disappoint at any turn - rich, full-bodied, fruit-driven, maritime, mineral. Varietally on-point and delivering excellence at all levels.

You'd pay $120 full price.

2x Domaine Roland Lavantureux Chablis 2022

White — Chardonnay

Burgundy — France

This producer has been growing grapes in Chablis for generations, but it wasn’t until 1979 that they started bottling their own wine. There’s Chablis, and then there are wines that remind you why this French region has gained such huge international fame. Small production is a hallmark of producers here (or rather, a requirement), but this house is all about small-volume, precisely made wines. Their Chablis appellation wine is made with minimal fuss - only 20% of the wine sees oak, so fruit purity is at the fore. Fresh, crunchy, and vibrant are words that come to mind. The well-balanced palate is full of yellow nectarines, grapefruit pith and melon. A touch of spice certainly makes things nice, but there’s plenty to love in every perfect element here.

You'd pay $80 full price.

2x Sophie Schaal Alsace Riesling 2023

White — Riesling

Alsace AOC — France

Is there anything the Schaal’s can’t do? They’ve clearly mastered South African and Alsatian wine and here’s a bit more of that ‘proof is in the pudding’. Sophie’s Alsace riesling is a blend of fruit from two vineyards representing the major soil types in the region - granitic with mica and clayey limestone. The wine is laser sharp with an expression of fresh lime, lemon curd, green apple, slate and orange blossom. Refreshing, bracing and complete, the perfect example of the style.

You'd pay $60 full price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Chablis represents Chardonnay in its purest form, shaped by the unique Kimmeridgian soil rich in fossilised oyster shells. This terroir creates the distinctive mineral backbone and crisp acidity that sets it apart from richer, oak-aged Chardonnays. The two Chablis producers in this selection, Domaine Vocoret and Domaine Roland Lavantureux, showcase this classic style with their focus on expressing the limestone-driven character of this renowned Burgundian appellation.

Alsace sits at the crossroads of French and German winemaking traditions, creating a unique style where Riesling expresses both elegance and power. The region's continental climate and diverse soils allow Riesling to develop complex aromatics while maintaining the crisp acidity that makes it so food-friendly. Sophie Schaal's organic approach further enhances these natural characteristics, producing wines that showcase the grape's ability to reflect its terroir with remarkable clarity and finesse.

Serve both styles well-chilled at 8-10°C, but consider the progression when tasting. Start with the Chablis to appreciate its mineral precision and citrus notes, then move to the Alsace Riesling which will show more honeyed complexity and nectarine flavours. The Chablis pairs beautifully with oysters or goat cheese, while the Riesling complements spicier dishes or rich seafood preparations, making this selection perfect for exploring how terroir influences the same meal.

Vieilles Vignes translates to 'old vines', typically referring to grapevines over 30-40 years old that produce lower yields but more concentrated fruit. These mature vines develop deeper root systems that access different soil layers, contributing to greater complexity and mineral expression. In Chablis, old vine Chardonnay often displays more intense minerality and longer finish, making the Vocoret bottling a premium expression that showcases the full potential of this celebrated terroir.

Both styles offer different ageing trajectories that reward patience. The Chablis wines can develop beautifully over 5-8 years, gaining honeyed complexity while retaining their mineral core, with the Vocoret Vieilles Vignes having particularly strong ageing potential. The Alsace Riesling, being younger, is drinking beautifully now but can also evolve over 3-5 years, developing petrol notes and deeper fruit concentration that Riesling enthusiasts prize.
