1x Chateau Yaldara 1847 First Pick Shiraz 2020

Red — Shiraz

Barossa — Australia

The Boss

So much has been written about Barossa shiraz, especially at the top end in terms of quality. This one might just sit in pole position, revealing layer after layer of complexity. It's aromatic, hinting at violets, boysenberry, tapenade and potpourri. Then you have a sip...blackberry, cocoa, vanillin, baking spices and a touch of toastiness. The tannins are there of course, but bathed in sweet fruit notes and a creamy texture. This is big, this is bold, this is all that Barossa strives to be.

You'd pay $500 full price.

1x Schild Estate 'Edel' Shiraz 2018

Red — Shiraz

Barossa — Australia

A wax dipped, deeply layered beauty out of the hands of Schild Estate, on of Barossa's most adored producers. Macerated plums, fresh vanilla pods, cracked pepper and roasted coffee beans are just some of the layers that you can expect here. Did we mention a robust, silky palate? That's right, this is a wine of very high calibre. Given Schild Estate is all about their heritage estate vineyards, I guess we should never have been surprised at how good this could get.

You'd pay $130 full price.

1x Jim Brand Wines The Pursuit Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

Red — Cabernet Sauvignon

Coonawarra — Australia

When we have this producer at the tasting bench, you can be sure there's a few of us salivating over the wines. This cabernet is always an absolute standout, and we all nod in agreement that this has to be one of the best value cabernets we've ever sold. Ever. An extroverted red which refuses to back down, this wine is fragrant with dark forest fruits seducing the nose, while traces of mint and cedar oak add a twist of regional character. A torrent of ripe plum, dark berry and blackcurrant make their presence known on the palate -  clearly dominating but steering clear of overwhelming the tastebuds. The finish is superb with great length and a dry finale. An outstanding example of how to balance power with restraint, and succeed - this magnificent cab shows others how it’s done.

You'd pay $65 full price.

1x Chateau Dasvin Bel Air Haut-Médoc Cabernet Blend 2011

Red — Cabernet Blend

Bordeaux — France

Marked ruby tobacco and sweet smoke at the fore, with herby, savoury complexity sitting in behind that. There is still fruit generosity in the mix; plums and briary fruits with spicy nettle, too. Some earthy decay and cedar provide a perfect frame for that ripe, developed fruit profile. While this wine will continue to cellar well, it's drinking perfectly now, so don't wait - dig in.

1x Domaine de Ferrand Mistral Côtes du Rhône Mistral 2022

Red — Grenache Blend

Côtes du Rhône — France

A real 'for those in the know' kind of wine, the Mistral is one outrageously good value bottle of wine. From the legendary hands of Domaine de Ferrand, this grenache dominant blend (80%) is consistently used as a benchmark around the Mofo office for what great CDR (Côtes du Rhône) can and should represent. Only cement and stainless steel are used for ageing, allowing the purity and complexity of the fruit to shine through. The resulting wine is so very vibrant, satisfyingly spicy and showcases a spectrum of blackberry and raspberry flavours. Dive in, this is completely delicious.

You'd pay $72 full price.

Frequently Asked Questions

The standout bottle is an exceptional shiraz worth $500 that has earned remarkable critical acclaim with scores including 98 points from Ray Jordan and 97 points from Wine Orbit. This wine represents the pinnacle of Australian shiraz craftsmanship, showcasing the complexity and depth that can only be achieved through meticulous vineyard management and winemaking expertise. Such high scores indicate a wine with exceptional balance, concentration, and ageing potential that will continue to evolve beautifully over the coming years.

The inclusion of Chateau Dasvin Bel Air Haut-Médoc and Domaine de Ferrand Côtes du Rhône creates a fascinating contrast between Old World and New World winemaking philosophies. The Bordeaux blend brings classic elegance and structure with its traditional cabernet-based composition, while the Rhône wine offers the spicy, herb-influenced character typical of Southern French terroir. This combination allows you to explore how different climates and winemaking traditions express similar grape varieties in distinctly different ways.

This collection spans the full spectrum of red wine flavours, from the dark fruit intensity of blackberry and plum to the savoury complexity of leather, tobacco, and spice. The shiraz selections will likely showcase Australia's signature style with rich chocolate and coffee notes, while the cabernet sauvignon brings structured tannins with cherry and mint characteristics. The diverse flavour profile means each bottle offers a different tasting experience, perfect for exploring how terroir and winemaking techniques influence flavour development.

With vintages ranging from 2011 to 2022, this collection offers both immediate drinking pleasure and cellaring potential. The 2011 Bordeaux has already developed secondary characteristics and is drinking beautifully now, while the newer Australian releases from 2020-2022 can be enjoyed immediately but will reward patient cellaring for 5-10 years. The exceptional $500 shiraz, given its outstanding ratings, likely has significant ageing potential and will continue to develop complexity over the next decade or more.

Beyond the obvious value of receiving a $500 wine as part of the collection, this case represents exceptional value through its curation of highly-rated wines from respected producers. The inclusion of wines scoring 94-98 points from critics like James Halliday and Ray Jordan means you're accessing premium quality that would typically cost significantly more when purchased individually. The mix of established Australian regions and French appellations also provides an educational tasting journey that would be expensive to assemble independently.
