Why do we love this wine?

So, what is Funsu? There’s a funny family story. Grandfather Alfonso of the Ferrio family was affectionately known as Funsu - and this wine is dedicated to his legacy. Made entirely from nebbiolo, and blended from two vineyards, the intention is to balance an elegant soft nebbiolo, with a vineyard offering more tannin structure. But, the trick is, this wine is made entirely in tank - so you can drink it young and pretty. The characters here are all about pleasure you want this weekend, not in the next century. Roses, violets and sour cherry pucker with subtle tea leaves and a slight earthiness. Bust out the truffles, the mushrooms, the hard cheese, the risotto... heck, even the rabbit ragu. The food will only get better with this delightful red.

Frequently Asked Questions

Unlike the prestigious nebbiolo wines from Barolo and Barbaresco that require years of ageing in oak, Funsu is crafted entirely in stainless steel tanks to preserve its youthful charm. This tank-only approach allows you to enjoy nebbiolo's signature floral and cherry characteristics immediately, without waiting decades for tannins to soften. The winemaker deliberately blends fruit from two contrasting vineyards - one offering elegance, the other structure - to create a balanced wine that's approachable now rather than cellar-worthy.

Funsu was the affectionate nickname for Grandfather Alfonso of the Ferrio family, and this wine serves as a heartfelt tribute to his legacy. Italian wine families often honour their ancestors through special cuvées, and this personal touch reflects the deep generational connections that define Piedmontese winemaking culture. The name represents not just family history, but also the approachable, warm character of the wine itself - much like a beloved grandfather who brings joy to family gatherings.

Serve Funsu slightly below room temperature (around 16-18°C) to highlight its fresh floral aromatics of roses and violets while maintaining the wine's medium-bodied structure. The tank-fermented style means it benefits from a brief decanting of 30 minutes to open up the sour cherry and earthy notes. This nebbiolo shines with rich, umami-driven dishes like mushroom risotto, aged cheeses, or truffle pasta, where its natural acidity cuts through richness while its subtle tannins complement earthy flavours.

This wine is specifically designed for immediate enjoyment and represents a modern approach to nebbiolo winemaking that prioritises early accessibility. The tank-only fermentation preserves fresh fruit flavours and prevents the development of harsh tannins that typically require years to integrate. While it could develop for 3-5 years, you'd be missing the point - Funsu celebrates nebbiolo's inherent elegance and food-friendliness when young, offering weekend pleasure rather than requiring patient cellaring.

Cascina Ca'Rossa has earned recognition as a 'Cult Producer' and consistently appears on prestigious lists like the 'Best 100 Italian Wines', indicating their exceptional quality standards in the competitive Piedmont region. The estate demonstrates innovative winemaking by creating approachable nebbiolo expressions alongside traditional styles, showing versatility that appeals to both purists and modern wine drinkers. Their ability to balance respect for Langhe terroir with contemporary techniques positions them among Piedmont's most exciting producers.
