Why do we love this wine?

As wine lovers, the words 'low yield' always excite us, and with good reason. The concentration of fruit from a vineyard such as this, which produces a mere 2 tonnes of fruit, is quite frankly astonishing. Expect thick and rich decadent black plum up front, with all the McLaren Vale traits you would expect - notes of kirsch are excellently layered on sprinkles of toasty vanilla oak and dark chocolate. These rich oak notes are ever present on the finish, which is all carried forward by ripe mouth-watering tannins. This is a wine with fantastic balance already, but you can look to the future here and expect this wine to reward any cellaring for up to 20 years.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine comes from an extremely low-yielding vineyard that produces only 2 tonnes of fruit per hectare, compared to typical commercial vineyards that might yield 8-12 tonnes. When vines are stressed to produce less fruit, they concentrate all their energy into fewer bunches, resulting in grapes with exceptional flavour density and complexity. This low-trellis method also keeps the fruit closer to the ground, benefiting from reflected heat and creating the rich, decadent black plum characteristics that define this wine.

This Shiraz has excellent cellaring potential of up to 20 years due to its full-bodied structure and well-integrated tannins. The wine's natural acidity, combined with quality oak treatment and concentrated fruit from low yields, provides the backbone needed for long-term ageing. As it matures, the bold black fruit flavours will evolve into more complex tertiary notes, while the oak and tannins will soften and integrate further, creating an even more harmonious drinking experience.

The wine's rich black plum fruit and toasty vanilla oak make it perfect for robust dishes like grilled lamb with rosemary, slow-cooked beef brisket, or aged hard cheeses. The mouth-watering tannins and dark chocolate notes also complement barbecued meats beautifully, which is classic McLaren Vale territory. For something different, try it with dark chocolate desserts or even spicy Middle Eastern cuisine where the wine's fruit concentration can stand up to bold spices.

With scores ranging from 94-96 points from respected critics like Bob Campbell MW and Wine Orbit, plus a Gold Medal from the London Wine Competition, this wine represents exceptional quality for McLaren Vale Shiraz. These consistently high ratings across multiple reviewers indicate the wine displays classic regional characteristics while offering something special in terms of concentration and balance. The recognition from both Australian and international critics suggests this wine successfully represents the best of what McLaren Vale can produce.

Ironstone soils are rich in iron oxide, which gives McLaren Vale its distinctive red earth and contributes to the region's reputation for powerful, mineral-driven Shiraz. These soils provide excellent drainage while retaining enough moisture for the vines, and the iron content can subtly influence the wine's colour intensity and structural backbone. Combined with the low-trellis viticulture, this terroir creates the perfect conditions for producing the concentrated, full-bodied style that has made this wine so highly regarded by critics.
