Potentially controversial, but the Yarra Valley is Australia's best cabernet producing region. There has always been push and pull as to whether the region is best suited to Burgundian or Bordeaux varietals, but, for me at least, the Yarra Valley can do it all.

Why do we love this wine?

Overwhelmingly cabernet with a little under 1/10 Malbec for good measure. New french oak gives plushness and shape, the density of the fruit (and the quality) gives drive, power, and grunt. A swirl of red and blue fruit at the fore, earth, spice, tobacco, and cedar follow quickly behind. This is stylish and finessed cabernet, as the cooler Yarra Valley is want to produce, and that bit of elegance is welcome - it pulls on the reigns of what is otherwise a full force, full bodied, beast of a wine.

Halliday Wine Companion

Halliday Wine Companion

" 91/9% cabernet sauvignon/malbec, aged 18 months in 23% new French oak barriques, then blended and matured 6 months in foudre. The full bottle weighs just a few grams under 2kg – not something to be proud of. I needed someone with the strength of Ulysses to help lift and pour it. This has come together well, with cassis and currant coated in savoury flavours of pepper, char and wild herbs. It's full bodied but not unwieldy, as the tannins are fine, long and ripe. Incredibly fresh. It's worth noting the top cabernets from the Yarra are not in monstrously heavy bottles like this one." 95 Points.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Yarra Valley's cooler climate produces a more elegant, finessed style compared to warmer Australian regions. While this wine maintains full-bodied power and intensity, it showcases restraint and sophistication that balances the natural grunt of Cabernet Sauvignon. The addition of nearly 10% Malbec adds colour depth and structural complexity, creating a wine that's both powerful and refined.

New French oak provides the structural backbone that shapes this wine's plush texture and adds layers of cedar and spice complexity. French oak is prized for its tight grain and subtle vanilla notes, which complement rather than overpower the fruit. The oak integration allows the dense fruit quality to shine while adding sophisticated tannin structure that will help the wine age gracefully.

James Halliday's 95-point score places this wine in the 'outstanding' category, indicating exceptional quality and cellaring potential. Halliday is Australia's most respected wine critic, and scores above 94 points represent wines of remarkable distinction. This rating suggests the wine demonstrates perfect varietal expression, excellent winemaking, and the ability to develop beautifully over 10-15 years.

Museum Release indicates this 2018 vintage has been carefully cellared by the winery for several years before release, allowing it to develop complexity and integration. This practice demonstrates the producer's confidence in the wine's ageing potential and ensures buyers receive a wine that's already showing developed characteristics. The extended cellaring has likely softened tannins and allowed the oak, fruit, and earthy elements to harmonise beautifully.

The wine's combination of red and blue fruit, earthy undertones, and cedar notes makes it perfect for rich, savoury dishes. Consider pairing with herb-crusted lamb, aged beef steaks, or game meats that echo the wine's earthy, tobacco-like complexity. The full-bodied structure and tannin backbone can stand up to strong cheeses like aged cheddar or robust dishes featuring mushrooms and root vegetables.
