Why do we love this wine?

A real 'for those in the know' kind of wine, the Mistral is one outrageously good value bottle of wine. From the legendary hands of one of the region's best, this grenache dominant blend (80%) is consistently used as a benchmark around the Mofo office for what great CDR (Côtes du Rhône) can and should represent. Only cement and stainless steel are used for ageing, allowing the purity and complexity of the fruit to shine through. The resulting wine is so very vibrant, satisfyingly spicy, and showcases a spectrum of blackberry and raspberry flavours. Dive in, this is completely delicious.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine comes from Domaine de Ferrand, recognised as one of the region's finest producers and rated as a 'Cult Producer'. The 80% grenache blend is aged exclusively in cement and stainless steel rather than oak, which preserves the pure fruit character and natural complexity. This traditional approach, combined with the producer's legendary reputation, delivers exceptional quality that's often used as a benchmark for what great Côtes du Rhône should represent.

Grenache thrives in the warm, Mediterranean climate of the southern Rhône, where it develops intense fruit flavours while maintaining good acidity. As the dominant grape in this blend at 80%, it provides the wine's characteristic blackberry and raspberry flavours along with those distinctive spicy notes. Grenache's ability to express terroir without heavy oak influence makes it perfect for this style, where the cement and stainless steel ageing allows the grape's natural vibrancy to shine through.

The textured aspect refers to the wine's substantial mouthfeel and complexity beyond simple fruit flavours, while savoury indicates earthy, herbal, and spicy elements that balance the berry fruit. You'll experience layers of allspice alongside the blackberry and raspberry, creating a wine that's satisfying and food-friendly rather than just sweet and simple. This combination makes it versatile with hearty dishes like grilled meats, Mediterranean cuisine, or aged cheeses.

The 2023 vintage represents the most recent expression of this consistently excellent wine, offering peak freshness and vibrancy. Young Côtes du Rhône like this showcases the pure, energetic fruit that grenache delivers when recently harvested, with the spicy complexity already well-developed. While this wine can age gracefully, the 2023 vintage is perfect for enjoying now when the raspberry and blackberry flavours are at their most expressive and the texture is beautifully balanced.

A benchmark wine sets the standard by which others are judged, and this Mistral consistently delivers exceptional quality-to-price ratio that defines what great Côtes du Rhône should be. Its combination of purity from cement ageing, complexity from skilled winemaking, and the vibrant spice-and-fruit profile represents the ideal expression of the appellation. When wine professionals use a bottle as their reference point, it means this wine captures the essence of its region while offering outstanding value.
