Why do we love this wine?

There's a lot of wine in Spain (seriously, a lot) and sifting through it all is sometimes harder than finding a needle in a hay stack. I came across this wine at the annual Barcelona Wine Week, amongst hundreds of producer stands. It's a certified banger from Navarra, a northern extension of the world famous Rioja. This sits in the ethereal category, brimming with bright raspberry and cherry components, with a graceful backbone of woody spices and licorice depth. If you like world class wines that don't break the bank, lucky you: here it is.

Frequently Asked Questions

Navarra sits just north of Rioja and shares similar climate conditions, but it's known for being more experimental with grape varieties like Graciano. While Rioja focuses heavily on Tempranillo, Navarra producers have greater freedom to explore indigenous varieties, often resulting in wines with more distinctive character. This Agramont showcases Graciano's natural ability to produce wines with intense colour and complex spice notes that rival Rioja's best offerings.

Graciano is one of Spain's most prized indigenous varieties, traditionally used as a blending grape in Rioja for its intense colour and acidity. As a single varietal wine, it's quite rare because the grape is notoriously difficult to grow and produces low yields. The variety naturally develops complex flavours of dark fruit, liquorice, and spices, making wines that age beautifully while maintaining their vibrant character.

Serve this Graciano at cellar temperature (16-18°C) to allow its complex aromatics to fully express themselves. The wine's medium body and bright acidity make it incredibly food-friendly - try it with grilled meats, aged cheeses, or Spanish tapas. Decanting for 30 minutes will help open up the woody spices and liquorice notes, though it's perfectly enjoyable straight from the bottle.

A 97-point score from Decanter represents exceptional quality, placing this wine in the top tier of international wine competition. Decanter's judging panel consists of Master Sommeliers and wine experts who taste thousands of wines blind, making their Platinum Medal particularly meaningful. This score indicates the wine demonstrates outstanding balance, complexity, and typicity for its variety and region.

This 2021 Graciano is drinking beautifully now, showing vibrant fruit character balanced with developing complexity. Graciano's natural structure and acidity mean it will continue to evolve gracefully over the next 5-8 years, with the woody spices becoming more integrated and secondary flavours emerging. You can enjoy it immediately for its fresh fruit expression or cellar it to experience how Spanish indigenous varieties develop with time.
