Geelong is, for me, the best pinot noir producing region outside of Burgundy. Not the USA's Oregon, not New Zealand's Central Otago - little old Geelong on Victoria's south coast.

Why do we love this wine?

Fresh and inviting, this will give a lot with just a little swirl in the glass. Raspberry coulis, winter strawberry, some sweet spice, fennel, thistle. The complexity far outpaces its price tag. The wine is structured without sacrificing finesse, which means it's pretty without being thin or wussy. This is dangerous value at $29.90 and worth stocking up because we don't anticipate we'll be able to hang onto it too long.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine punches well above its weight class, delivering complexity typically found in bottles costing twice as much. The 95-point rating from Geelong Wine Show and Gold Medal recognition validate its quality, while the intricate flavour profile of raspberry coulis, winter strawberry, and sweet spice demonstrates sophisticated winemaking. At $29.90, it represents the sweet spot where premium Geelong terroir meets accessible pricing.

Geelong's cool maritime climate creates ideal conditions for elegant Pinot Noir, allowing grapes to ripen slowly while retaining natural acidity and delicate fruit flavours. This regional influence is evident in the wine's structured yet finessed style, where the cranberry and sour cherry notes reflect the area's ability to produce Pinot Noir with both intensity and restraint. The fennel and thistle aromatics are classic markers of this distinguished Victorian wine region.

The wine's elegant, lighter style and bright berry flavours make it incredibly food-friendly, particularly with duck breast, salmon, or mushroom risotto. The structured backbone can handle richer dishes, while the delicate strawberry and cranberry notes complement lighter fare like roasted chicken or charcuterie. The sweet spice elements also pair beautifully with Asian cuisine, especially dishes with five-spice or ginger.

While delicious now with its fresh raspberry and strawberry fruit, this wine has the structure to develop beautifully over 3-5 years. The current vibrancy will evolve into more complex earthy and savoury notes, while the tannin structure suggests it won't lose its elegance with age. Given the exceptional value and limited availability, consider buying multiple bottles to enjoy both now and later.

The '6ft6' likely references either the height of the winemaker or a specific vineyard block designation, which is common in boutique Australian wineries where personal touches and site-specific naming create distinctive wine identities. This naming approach reflects Austin's Wines' artisanal philosophy, where individual vineyard parcels or personal characteristics become part of the wine's story. Such specific naming often indicates careful attention to detail and small-batch production methods.
