Why do we love this wine?

Badine de la Patache is a reference to the horse whips used by the drivers of 19th century stagecoaches. Château La Patache sits at the site of a former passageway for these stagecoaches in Pomerol. Badine de la Patache is a 90/10 blend of merlot and cab franc sourced from several plots on the property, all worked by hand to reach a final result that is high in quality yet quite low in quantity. There simply isn’t much of this wine produced.

On the nose you’ll find cherry, strawberry, vanilla (from 12 months in oak) and forest undergrowth. It’s savoury on the palate, rather medium-bodied for Bordeaux, and laden with silky tannins which don’t require years and years of cellaring. So no need to crack that whip if someone pops the cork right away.

International Wine Report

The 2019 Badine de la Patache offers inviting aromas of ripe dark cherries and blackberries which are laced with tobacco, cocoa, baking spices and hints of wet stones which all come together in the glass. On the palate this is medium-bodied with a gorgeous silky texture and lovely overall balance through the pretty finish. This is accessible now and should continue to cellar nicely

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine breaks the mould of traditional Bordeaux expectations with its medium-bodied profile and approachable tannin structure. While many Bordeaux wines demand years of cellaring, the silky tannins here are designed for earlier enjoyment. The 90/10 merlot-cabernet franc blend emphasises the softer, more fruit-forward character typical of Pomerol's clay-rich soils, creating a wine that's both elegant and accessible.

The wine is crafted from hand-worked vineyard plots at Château La Patache, where quality takes precedence over quantity. This artisanal approach, combined with the specific terroir of Pomerol's small appellation, naturally limits production volumes. The meticulous attention to detail in both vineyard and winery ensures each bottle represents the best expression of the vintage, making it a genuinely rare find.

The year-long oak maturation adds layers of vanilla and subtle spice notes that complement rather than overpower the fruit. This careful integration allows the cherry and strawberry characteristics to shine while adding structural complexity. The oak treatment enhances the wine's savoury qualities and contributes to the silky tannin texture, creating a harmonious balance between fruit purity and sophisticated barrel influence.

The 'Badine' refers to the horse whips used by 19th-century stagecoach drivers who passed through this very site in Pomerol. This historical connection reflects the estate's deep roots in the region's transport heritage, when Bordeaux wines were beginning their journey to international markets. The name pays homage to this crossroads location while symbolising the wine's role as a bridge between traditional Bordeaux winemaking and modern accessibility.

Unlike many Bordeaux wines that require extensive cellaring, this Pomerol is designed for relatively early enjoyment thanks to its refined tannin structure. The 2019 vintage is drinking beautifully now and will continue to develop over the next 5-8 years. The wine's medium-bodied nature and integrated oak make it perfect for current consumption, though patient collectors will be rewarded with additional complexity as the forest undergrowth notes evolve.
