Why do we love this wine?

Old, old, old vines in the Barossa planted back in the 1850’s and tended by the same family for the last 40 years. I’d say they know what they are doing at this stage. This is pure Barossa, but with an attractive approachability in youth. If you want to lay it down for 10+ years, go for it. But if you’re the impatient sort, you’ll be rewarded with a beautiful drop from the get go. It features red and blue fruits, fine tannins and a deep colour. We don’t need to overthink it here. If you like Barossa Shiraz, you’ll LOVE this.

Frequently Asked Questions

The vines date back to the 1850s, making them among Australia's oldest surviving Shiraz plantings. These ancient vines naturally produce lower yields but more concentrated fruit, as their deep root systems access unique mineral profiles from decades of soil interaction. The same family has tended these vines for 40 years, ensuring consistent viticultural practices that preserve the vineyard's heritage character.

This Shiraz offers the rare flexibility of being delicious both now and after extended cellaring. While it's immediately approachable with beautiful fruit expression, the wine's structure and old vine concentration suggest it will develop greater complexity over 10+ years. The tannin profile and Barossa terroir typically reward patience, evolving from primary fruit flavours to more savoury, earthy characteristics.

The wine's mulberry and plum fruit profile with vanilla notes pairs excellently with grilled red meats, particularly lamb with rosemary or beef with pepper crusts. The full-bodied structure can handle rich, flavourful dishes like slow-cooked osso buco or aged hard cheeses. The fine tannins also complement barbecued meats, making it perfect for Australian outdoor dining.

This represents classic Barossa style with the added distinction of old vine fruit, which typically produces more elegant wines than younger plantings. The 'approachable in youth' character sets it apart from some Barossa Shiraz that require extensive cellaring to show their best. Bethany's boutique status means smaller production runs and more hands-on winemaking compared to larger Barossa producers.

The 2021 vintage in Barossa is noted as a 'killer vintage', benefiting from ideal growing conditions that balanced ripeness with natural acidity. This vintage timing allows the old vines' character to shine through while maintaining the fresh fruit expression that makes the wine immediately enjoyable. The combination of exceptional vintage conditions and ancient vine material creates a wine that captures both power and finesse.
