Why do we love this wine?

Every time a wine of this calibre makes its way to Mofo HQ, we tend to roll out the red carpet. The GR shiraz is a small production event each year, from selected vineyard parcels. It’s then aged in the best French and American oak, but not overdone in a blockbuster style. Sumptuous and rich with juicy blackberry, dark cherry and plum underlined by spice, pepper and a touch of vanilla, this boasts exceptional long drawn tannins throughout. Bethany are one of the stalwarts, among the oldest established winegrowers in the Barossa. The Schrapel family arrived from Silesia in 1844 and haven’t looked back, finally starting their Bethany wine label in 1981. Beautifully aged and ready to drink now, patience is not a pre-requisite - simply decant and luxuriate in the depth, complexities and opulence.

GR stands for Geoff and Robert Schrapel, the fifth generation brothers who founded Bethany in 1981 and who continue to offer fabulous wines with the support of their family. For this, their prestige release, they source the fruit from their finest parcels of old bush vines. The oak is mostly French, with a contribution from American. Under cork, there were 430 dozen bottled. An opaque maroon, the nose gives us chocolate, new leather, cloves, spices, aniseed, soy, black fruits and mushrooms. There are hints of axle grease (despite the connation, consider this a positive, as part of the complexity of the aromas). Great length here and the balance is never off-kilter in the least. A sleek texture and there is good intensity for the full journey. Notes of mocha and coffee beans emerge more on the palate. Has a good fifteen years ahead, over which time, expect this score to rise.

Frequently Asked Questions

The GR Reserve represents Bethany's premium tier, crafted from carefully selected vineyard parcels rather than their standard fruit sources. This small-production wine receives extended ageing in premium French and American oak barrels, creating greater complexity and structure. The result is a more concentrated, age-worthy expression that showcases the finest terroir characteristics of their Barossa vineyards, justifying its exceptional 97-point Wine Orbit rating.

While this wine is beautifully aged and ready to drink now, quality Barossa Shiraz from established producers like Bethany typically develops magnificently over 10-15 years. The wine's exceptional long-drawn tannins and full-bodied structure suggest excellent cellaring potential, with the cocoa and tobacco notes likely to evolve into more complex leather and earthy characteristics. Store in a cool, dark place and expect peak drinking between now and 2035.

Decanting this full-bodied Shiraz serves two crucial purposes: it allows the wine to breathe and opens up the complex aromatics, while also separating any natural sediment that may have formed during bottle ageing. The rich blackberry and dark cherry flavours will become more expressive after 30-60 minutes of aeration, and the spice and pepper notes will integrate more harmoniously with the vanilla oak influences.

The Schrapel family's 180-year presence in the Barossa Valley represents one of Australia's most enduring winemaking legacies, beginning when they arrived from Silesia in 1844. This deep-rooted connection to the land means access to some of the valley's oldest vine sites and accumulated knowledge of local terroir nuances. Their Five Red Star Halliday rating reflects this expertise, with the GR Reserve showcasing traditional Barossa power balanced by generations of refined winemaking techniques.

This rich, full-bodied Shiraz with its cocoa and tobacco undertones pairs magnificently with robust red meats like slow-cooked lamb shanks, grilled ribeye, or game meats such as venison. The wine's spice and pepper characteristics complement barbecued meats beautifully, while the vanilla oak notes harmonise with dishes featuring mushrooms or aged cheeses. For a classic Barossa pairing, try it with a hearty beef and red wine casserole that echoes the wine's own depth and complexity.
