Why do we love this wine?

Crafted by boutique winery Brightwater from their little patch of paradise in the Nelson region, this is a pretty wonderful pinot noir. The sunshine and sea breezes of the region produce beautifully balanced fruit that is harnessed in elegant wines. The wine is bursting with aromas of bright cherries and plums that play with floral, gamey notes. Dangerously drinkable, the palate is vibrant, juicy and smooth.

This is stunningly beautiful with dark berry, smoky bacon, thyme, cedar and dark mushroom notes. The concentrated palate displays refined mouthfeel and excellent depth, combined with flowing texture and fine grainy tannins, finishing persistent and velvety. At its best: now to 2030.

Frequently Asked Questions

Nelson's unique combination of sunshine hours and cooling sea breezes creates perfect conditions for Pinot Noir cultivation. The maritime influence moderates temperatures while maintaining excellent ripening conditions, allowing the delicate Pinot Noir grape to develop complex flavours without losing its characteristic elegance. This terroir produces the beautifully balanced fruit that Brightwater harnesses in this exceptional 2020 vintage.

The bright cherry and plum characteristics come from Nelson's optimal growing conditions and careful winemaking techniques that preserve the fruit's natural vibrancy. These primary fruit aromas are enhanced by the wine's medium-bodied structure, which allows the cherry notes to shine while the plum adds depth and richness. The interplay with floral and gamey notes creates a complex aromatic profile that's quintessentially Pinot Noir.

With scores of 96 points from Michael Cooper and 95 points from Sam Kim, this wine represents exceptional quality even by New Zealand Pinot Noir standards. These consistently high ratings from respected critics indicate masterful winemaking and outstanding fruit quality. The Five Star ratings from Wine Orbit and Peter Saunders further confirm this is a standout example that punches well above its weight class.

The allspice notes add a warming, aromatic complexity that beautifully bridges the bright fruit flavours with the wine's more savoury, gamey characteristics. This spice element is typical of well-made Pinot Noir and likely develops from the grape's natural compounds combined with careful fermentation techniques. It provides structure and interest without overwhelming the delicate strawberry and black cherry fruit that defines the wine's character.

This phrase captures the wine's perfect balance of complexity and accessibility - it's sophisticated enough to impress serious wine lovers yet smooth and juicy enough to disappear from the bottle quickly. The vibrant, medium-bodied palate delivers immediate pleasure without harsh tannins or overwhelming intensity. It's the kind of Pinot Noir that seamlessly transitions from contemplative sipping to effortless enjoyment with food or friends.
