I'm keen to not bury the lead on this one, so here goes: this is matured in 50% new French oak for 20 months. Lovers of luxury, eat your heart out.

Why do we love this wine?

This strikes the fresh jam cord perfectly (and it's a hard chord to play); the trick is to find developed fruit flavours without falling into overly unctuous and too-ripe territory. When winemakers get it right the results are outstanding - lucky for you, this is one such wine. Spiced, herbacious, and delivering a long fantail finish that ties the wine neatly together and has you (almost unconsciously) lifting the glass back to your lips. I will tell you to cellar this (and you will be rewarded if you do) but it's hypocritical of me, because I've already consumed my modest allocation.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Reserve Draycott Shiraz achieves the difficult balance of delivering rich, developed fruit flavours without becoming overly heavy or jammy - a common pitfall in warm climate Shiraz production. The wine showcases the hallmark intensity of Barossa Valley terroir while maintaining freshness and elegance. Its spiced, herbaceous character and long finish demonstrate the sophisticated winemaking approach that has earned Burge Family recognition as an iconic producer in the region.

While this Shiraz is drinking beautifully now with its immediate appeal and balanced structure, it has excellent cellaring potential due to its full-bodied nature and quality tannin structure. Barossa Shiraz from top producers like Burge Family typically develops greater complexity over 8-15 years, with the fruit flavours evolving from fresh blackberry to more savoury, earthy notes. The wine's high ratings suggest it has the backbone to reward patient collectors, though its current drinkability makes it tempting to enjoy sooner.

The wine's rich blackberry and dark chocolate notes, combined with its oaky structure, make it ideal for robust dishes that can match its intensity. Think slow-cooked lamb shanks, grilled ribeye with herb butter, or aged hard cheeses like vintage cheddar. The spiced, herbaceous character also complements Mediterranean dishes with rosemary and thyme, while the wine's full body can stand up to barbecued meats with smoky, caramelised flavours.

The exceptional 97-point ratings from both Patrick Eckel and Wine Orbit reflect the wine's technical excellence and distinctive character within the competitive Barossa Shiraz category. Critics particularly value wines that achieve complexity without sacrificing drinkability - this Reserve Draycott demonstrates masterful fruit selection and winemaking technique. The combination of old vine fruit, single vineyard sourcing, and the Burge Family's generational expertise creates a wine that expresses both place and craftsmanship at the highest level.

The Reserve designation indicates this is among Burge Family's premium tier wines, crafted from their finest fruit selections and receiving extended attention during production. Draycott likely refers to a specific vineyard block or section that consistently produces exceptional quality grapes, allowing for single-vineyard expression. This approach enables the winemaker to showcase the unique characteristics of a particular site within the broader Barossa region, resulting in a wine with greater complexity and individual personality than standard releases.
