Why do we love this wine?

Casa Burmester has been shipping tawny to Britain and Europe since 1750, so you know they’re pretty savvy when it comes to porto production. This one picked up 95 points at the Decanter World Wine Awards as well as a stack of gold medals thanks to its coffee, caramel deliciousness. We don’t have many ports roll through the doors at the ‘Fo but they get a serious amount of attention when they do, and for good reason. There ain’t nothing more relaxing than kicking back with a glass of tawny at home, so fortify your strongholds mofos.

Decanter

Fruit for this 10 Year Old comes from old vines and the wine is aged in s mall oak casks. Lifted aromas and flavours of gentle dried apricot mobilising to a soft, seamless finish. Appealing depth and warmth, showing aromas of fig, nuts and prune that unfold onto an invitingly rich, spicy and nutty palate.

Frequently Asked Questions

The decade of ageing in wooden barrels transforms this port from the deep purple of youth into the characteristic amber-brown colour that gives tawny its name. During this extended maturation, the wine develops complex oxidative flavours like coffee and caramel while losing the raw grape intensity of younger ports. The result is a smoother, more refined drinking experience with integrated alcohol and sophisticated nutty characteristics that can only come from patient barrel ageing.

Serve this port slightly chilled at around 16-18°C in a small wine glass to concentrate the aromas. Unlike vintage port which needs decanting, tawny is ready to drink immediately and won't improve with further ageing once opened. The sweet, opulent style makes it perfect as an after-dinner digestif, paired with nuts, aged cheeses, or chocolate desserts. A bottle will keep for several weeks after opening thanks to its fortified nature.

Burmester's success stems from nearly three centuries of expertise - they've been shipping tawny to Britain since 1750, giving them unparalleled knowledge of what makes exceptional port. Their traditional production methods in the Douro Valley, combined with careful selection of grape varieties and precise barrel ageing, consistently produce ports that impress international judges. The 95 points from Decanter and multiple gold medals reflect their mastery of balancing sweetness, alcohol, and complex flavours.

The coffee and caramel notes in this tawny make it a natural partner for desserts featuring chocolate, toffee, or nuts - think tiramisu, crème brûlée, or walnut tart. It also pairs beautifully with strong cheeses like aged cheddar or blue cheese, where the port's sweetness balances the saltiness. For a Portuguese tradition, try it with figs, almonds, or even a simple piece of dark chocolate to highlight the wine's inherent nuttiness.

This tawny is at its peak and ready to enjoy immediately - unlike vintage port, aged tawny doesn't benefit from further cellaring. The 10 years of barrel ageing has already developed all the complexity and smoothness you'll get from this style. Tawny ports are designed to be consumed upon release, having undergone their maturation in wood rather than bottle. Store it upright in a cool place and it will maintain its quality for years, making it perfect for occasional sipping.
