Why do we love this wine?

Ruby - known to bring good luck and fortune, is a rare red gem that coincidentally also happens to be the name of an incredible wine style. Hailing from the famous Burmester winery in Portugal, is a luxury product in itself. Brilliantly red in colour, it is also delightfully sweet, with sugary fruits such as macerated cherries, candied treats and a little bit of black tea. Simply wonderful. Deliberately made as a young wine, ‘ruby’ is all about retaining youthfulness, beauty and freshness. Made from your favourite Portuguese varieties: touriga nacional, touriga franca, tinta roriz, tinto cão, tinta barroca and tinta amarela (yep, we totally remembered all those off the top of our heads). This is the best way to enter yourself into the realm of fortified wines and the world of ports. With a friendly sugar balance, and bright red colour - this ticks plenty of boxes for us. An all class act, Ruby is.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ruby port is deliberately crafted to preserve youthfulness and vibrancy, unlike aged tawny ports that develop nutty, caramelised characteristics over time. This Burmester Ruby maintains its brilliant red colour and fresh fruit intensity by avoiding extended wood ageing, making it the most approachable entry point into the world of fortified wines. The style prioritises bright, sweet fruit flavours over the complex oxidative notes found in vintage or aged ports.

Serve this ruby port slightly chilled at around 16-18°C to enhance its fresh fruit character and balance the sweetness. It's magnificent with dark chocolate desserts, blue cheese, or dried fruits and nuts, where the wine's rich sweetness complements rather than competes. The chocolate and raisin notes in this Burmester make it particularly suited to chocolate-based desserts or as a contemplative after-dinner drink on its own.

Non-vintage (NV) indicates this port is a blend of wines from multiple years, allowing Burmester to maintain consistent house style and quality. This blending technique enables the winemaker to balance different harvest characteristics, ensuring the signature bright red colour and sweet fruit profile remains reliable bottle after bottle. NV ports like this focus on immediate enjoyment rather than the complexity that develops in single-vintage expressions.

The blend of touriga nacional, touriga franca, tinta roriz, and other traditional Douro varieties creates layers of complexity that no single grape could achieve alone. Each variety contributes distinct characteristics - touriga nacional provides structure and floral notes, while tinta roriz adds colour intensity and tannins. This traditional approach, refined over centuries in Portugal's Douro Valley, ensures the port has both immediate appeal and the depth that makes fortified wines so captivating.

Once opened, this ruby port will maintain its quality for 4-6 weeks when stored upright in the refrigerator with the cork firmly replaced. The fortification process (adding grape spirit during fermentation) gives port much greater longevity than regular wine after opening. Unlike vintage ports that may fade quickly, this young ruby style is more resilient, though it's best enjoyed within a month to appreciate its vibrant fruit character at its peak.
