Why do we love this wine?

Ruby - known to bring good luck and fortune, is a rare red gem that coincidentally also happens to be the name of an incredible wine style. Hailing from the famous Burmester winery in Portugal, is a luxury product in itself. Brilliantly red in colour, it is also delightfully sweet, with sugary fruits such as macerated cherries, candied treats and a little bit of black tea. Simply wonderful. Deliberately made as a young wine, ‘ruby’ is all about retaining youthfulness, beauty and freshness. Made from your favourite Portuguese varieties: touriga nacional, touriga franca, tinta roriz, tinto cão, tinta barroca and tinta amarela (yep, we totally remembered all those off the top of our heads). This is the best way to enter yourself into the realm of fortified wines and the world of ports. With a friendly sugar balance, and bright red colour - this ticks plenty of boxes for us. An all class act, Ruby is.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ruby port is deliberately crafted to preserve youthfulness and freshness, unlike aged tawny ports that develop complex nutty characteristics over time. This Burmester Ruby maintains its vibrant red colour and bright fruit flavours by avoiding extended wood ageing, making it the perfect introduction to fortified wines. The style emphasises immediate enjoyment rather than cellar development, delivering concentrated berry sweetness with chocolate undertones.

This Burmester Ruby showcases traditional Douro varieties including touriga nacional and touriga franca, which provide structure and spice, alongside tinta roriz (tempranillo) for body and tinto cão for elegance. The blend also incorporates tinta barroca and tinta amarela, creating layers of blackcurrant, raisin, and chocolate notes. These indigenous varieties have been perfected over centuries in the steep terraced vineyards of the Porto region.

Serve this Burmester Ruby slightly chilled at 16-18°C to enhance its fresh fruit character and balance the sweetness. It pairs beautifully with dark chocolate desserts, blue cheese, or dried fruits, where the port's natural sweetness complements rich, intense flavours. The wine's full-bodied nature also makes it excellent for sipping alone as a digestif after dinner.

Founded in 1750, Burmester represents nearly three centuries of port-making expertise in Portugal's Douro Valley, establishing them as one of the region's most respected houses. Their commitment to traditional methods combined with modern precision ensures consistent quality across their range. The house maintains extensive vineyard holdings in prime Porto DOC sites, allowing complete control over grape quality from vine to bottle.

Non-vintage (NV) indicates this ruby port is a carefully crafted blend of wines from multiple years, allowing Burmester to maintain consistent house style and quality. This blending approach enables the winemaker to balance varying vintage characteristics, ensuring the signature macerated cherry and candied fruit flavours remain constant. NV ports offer immediate drinking pleasure without the need for cellaring, making them ideal for regular enjoyment.
