Why do we love this wine?

Ruby - known to bring good luck and fortune, is a rare red gem that coincidentally also happens to be the name of an incredible wine style. Hailing from the famous Burmester winery in Portugal, is a luxury product in itself. Brilliantly red in colour, it is also delightfully sweet, with sugary fruits such as macerated cherries, candied treats and a little bit of black tea. Simply wonderful. Deliberately made as a young wine, ‘ruby’ is all about retaining youthfulness, beauty and freshness. Made from your favourite Portuguese varieties: touriga nacional, touriga franca, tinta roriz, tinto cão, tinta barroca and tinta amarela (yep, we totally remembered all those off the top of our heads). This is the best way to enter yourself into the realm of fortified wines and the world of ports. With a friendly sugar balance, and bright red colour - this ticks plenty of boxes for us. An all class act, Ruby is.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ruby port is deliberately crafted to preserve youthfulness and freshness, unlike aged tawny ports that develop nutty, caramel characteristics over time. This Burmester Ruby maintains its vibrant red colour and bright fruit flavours by avoiding extended wood ageing, making it the perfect introduction to fortified wines. The style emphasises immediate enjoyment rather than cellar development, offering accessible sweetness with concentrated berry and chocolate notes.

This Burmester Ruby showcases traditional Douro Valley varieties including Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca (the region's premium grapes), along with Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão, Tinta Barroca, and Tinta Amarela. These indigenous varieties each contribute unique characteristics - Touriga Nacional provides structure and floral notes, while Tinta Roriz adds colour intensity and the other varieties contribute complexity to the final blend.

Serve this Burmester Ruby slightly chilled at 16-18°C to enhance its fresh fruit character and balance the sweetness. It pairs beautifully with dark chocolate desserts, berry tarts, or strong cheeses like aged cheddar or blue cheese. The wine's natural sweetness and full body also make it excellent for sipping on its own as a digestif, particularly during cooler months.

The ruby gemstone has historically symbolised good fortune, passion, and prosperity across many cultures, which connects to the wine's name and vibrant red colour. In wine tradition, sharing port often marks celebrations and special occasions, reinforcing its association with positive moments. This Burmester Ruby's brilliant red hue mirrors the precious stone, making it both symbolically and literally a gem for special occasions.

Non-vintage (NV) indicates this ruby port is a carefully crafted blend of wines from multiple years, allowing Burmester to maintain consistent house style and quality. This blending approach enables the winemaker to balance different harvest characteristics, ensuring the signature bright fruit flavours and smooth sweetness remain constant. NV ports focus on immediate drinking pleasure rather than vintage variation, making them reliable choices for consistent enjoyment.
