Why do we love this wine?

The RP pinot is a tribute to Robyn Pamela, the matriarch of the Farr family and loving Mum to Nick Farr and Gary Farr's wife. A single vineyard pinot that is sourced from the Cote vineyard, a close planted, high-density vineyard that sits on an exposed cote (a slope or hillside). With a variety of different exposures, and soil types the final wine is an equal sum of all of its parts — perfumed, fine and detailed with an abundance of fruit. As the family can always count on their Mum, the Farr's can always count on this vineyard providing a wine that will be the backbone of the family's dynasty for many years to come. A must for any serious wine lover or collector.

Frequently Asked Questions

The RP Pinot Noir comes from the Cote vineyard, a high-density, close-planted site on an exposed hillside in Geelong. This elevated position with varied exposures and soil types creates the perfect stress conditions that Pinot Noir thrives in, forcing the vines to develop concentrated flavours while maintaining the grape's signature elegance. The combination of different microclimates within the single vineyard allows the winemaker to blend parcels that contribute complexity and balance to the final wine.

The 2022 vintage in Geelong benefited from a cooler growing season with well-timed rainfall, ideal conditions for Pinot Noir's delicate nature. This vintage showcases the varietal's ability to express terroir with perfumed aromatics and fine tannin structure, characteristics that align perfectly with By Farr's winemaking philosophy. The consistent 4.3 Vivino rating across all vintages demonstrates the producer's ability to maintain quality regardless of seasonal variations.

The wine's sour cherry and thyme notes, combined with its light-bodied elegance, make it exceptionally versatile with food. Classic pairings include roasted duck, salmon, or mushroom-based dishes where the wine's acidity can cut through richness without overwhelming delicate flavours. The herbal thyme character also complements Mediterranean cuisine, while the bright cherry fruit pairs beautifully with aged cheeses or charcuterie.

By Farr has earned its iconic status through consistent excellence and their Five Red Star Halliday rating, representing the pinnacle of Australian winemaking. The Farr family's multi-generational commitment to Geelong's cool climate has positioned them as pioneers in Australian Pinot Noir, proving that the variety can achieve Burgundian-style elegance in the right Australian terroir. Their single-vineyard approach and attention to detail have created wines that serious collectors recognise as benchmarks for the region.

This 2022 Pinot Noir is drinking beautifully now, showcasing its youthful fruit and floral perfume, but will continue to develop complexity over the next 5-8 years. Store it in a cool, dark place at consistent temperature to preserve its delicate aromatics and fine tannin structure. As it ages, expect the sour cherry notes to evolve into more complex red fruit flavours while the thyme character integrates further, creating the layered complexity that makes great Pinot Noir so compelling.
