This simply isn’t made every vintage, but only in the years that truly sing. 2015 was one such year. If you are a fan of Chianti, especially from Carobbio, but are looking for a little upgrade, we’ve got you covered.

Why do we love this wine?

We aren’t new to the Chianti from Carobbio. We’re well aware that it’s fantastic. What we are new to is their Reserva. This simply isn’t made every vintage, but only in the years that truly sing. 2015 was one such year. Grape selection takes place from three different vineyards, each with different soils ranging from clayey to extremely rocky. 18 months in French oak adds structure and ageability to this 100% sangiovese, bringing forth the red fruit character along with spicy and chocolate notes. If you are a fan of Chianti, especially from Carobbio, but are looking for a little upgrade, we’ve got you covered.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Riserva represents the pinnacle of Carobbio's winemaking, produced only in exceptional vintages like 2015. Unlike standard Chianti, it undergoes 18 months of French oak ageing which adds complexity and structure to the 100% Sangiovese. The extended ageing process develops deeper chocolate and spice notes while maintaining the classic red fruit character, creating a wine with greater depth and longevity than typical Chianti Classico.

The 2015 vintage in Tuscany was exceptional, with ideal weather conditions that allowed the Sangiovese grapes to achieve perfect ripeness and concentration. Carobbio only produces their Riserva in years that 'truly sing', making this a rare expression of their terroir. The combination of optimal growing conditions and selective grape harvesting from three distinct vineyard sites resulted in fruit quality worthy of their premium Riserva treatment.

The grapes are sourced from three vineyards with varying soil compositions, from clayey to extremely rocky terrain. Clay soils typically contribute to the wine's structure and colour intensity, while rocky soils stress the vines and concentrate flavours, adding mineral complexity. This diverse terroir blend creates a more nuanced wine than single-vineyard expressions, with the textured, savoury profile reflecting the interplay between these different soil types and their influence on Sangiovese expression.

The wine's medium body and savoury profile with allspice, blackberry, and mulberry notes make it ideal for classic Tuscan cuisine like osso buco or wild boar ragu. The French oak ageing and chocolate undertones complement aged cheeses, particularly Pecorino Toscano, while the natural acidity of Sangiovese cuts through rich tomato-based dishes. The wine's structure also pairs beautifully with grilled lamb or herb-crusted beef, where the spice notes can complement seasoning.

The 18 months of French oak ageing has built a solid structural foundation that allows this wine to develop gracefully over time. Chianti Classico Riserva from quality producers like Carobbio typically peak between 8-15 years from vintage, meaning this 2015 is approaching its optimal drinking window now. The wine's medium body and balanced tannins suggest it will continue to evolve beautifully for another 5-8 years, with the fruit flavours integrating further with the oak-derived spice and chocolate notes.
