This Saint-Emilion Grand Cru is ripe, approachable, spicy and lengthy. Plum and blackberry lead the way with notes of leather, mushroom, vanilla and caramel adding complexity. Like many modern Right Bank Bordeaux, it can be enjoyed now or well into the future.

Why do we love this wine?

Château Capet Duverger is the perfect example of a co-op driven wine success story in France. This Grand Cru from Saint-Emilion is of course led by merlot with the remaining fruit being cabernet sauvignon. The grapes are fermented in a gravity-flow winery before being put to rest in 20% new French oak for 12 months. It’s ripe, approachable, spicy and lengthy. Plum and blackberry lead the way with notes of leather, mushroom, vanilla and caramel adding complexity. Like many of the more modern Right Bank wines, this can be enjoyed now, but would also benefit from more time in the cellar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Grand Cru status in Saint-Emilion represents the second tier of the appellation's classification system, sitting below Premier Grand Cru Classé but above the basic Saint-Emilion AOC. This designation requires stricter production standards including lower yields, higher minimum alcohol levels, and more rigorous tasting approval. The Grand Cru classification ensures you're getting a wine that meets elevated quality benchmarks from one of Bordeaux's most prestigious Right Bank communes.

Château Capet Duverger exemplifies how modern French cooperatives can produce exceptional wines by pooling resources from multiple growers. This collaborative approach allows smaller vineyard owners to access premium winemaking facilities like gravity-flow systems and quality French oak barrels that would be prohibitively expensive individually. The cooperative model also enables consistent fruit sourcing and professional winemaking expertise, often resulting in better value wines that punch above their weight class.

The 2019 vintage in Bordeaux is celebrated for its ideal growing conditions - a warm, dry summer with perfectly timed rainfall that allowed grapes to achieve optimal ripeness while maintaining excellent acidity. This vintage produced wines with exceptional concentration and balance, particularly benefiting merlot-based Right Bank wines like this Saint-Emilion. The combination of ripe fruit flavours and structured tannins means 2019 wines offer both immediate drinking pleasure and excellent ageing potential.

This wine showcases the modern Right Bank style that's designed for both immediate enjoyment and medium-term cellaring. The 12 months in 20% new French oak has already softened the tannins, making it approachable now with its ripe plum and blackberry flavours. However, the wine's structure and complexity suggest it will continue developing for 8-12 years, with the leather and mushroom notes becoming more pronounced and the fruit evolving into more tertiary characteristics.

The medium-bodied, textured profile with plum, cedar, and allspice notes makes this wine incredibly food-friendly. Classic pairings include roasted lamb, beef bourguignon, or duck confit where the wine's savoury elements complement rich, slow-cooked meats. The wine's approachable tannins and ripe fruit also work beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, aged cheeses like comté or gruyère, and even herb-crusted pork tenderloin where the spice notes can shine.
