This Saint-Emilion Grand Cru is ripe, approachable, spicy and lengthy. Plum and blackberry lead the way with notes of leather, mushroom, vanilla and caramel adding complexity. Like many modern Right Bank Bordeaux, it can be enjoyed now or well into the future.

Why do we love this wine?

Château Capet Duverger is the perfect example of a co-op driven wine success story in France. This Grand Cru from Saint-Emilion is of course led by merlot with the remaining fruit being cabernet sauvignon. The grapes are fermented in a gravity-flow winery before being put to rest in 20% new French oak for 12 months. It’s ripe, approachable, spicy and lengthy. Plum and blackberry lead the way with notes of leather, mushroom, vanilla and caramel adding complexity. Like many of the more modern Right Bank wines, this can be enjoyed now, but would also benefit from more time in the cellar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Saint-Emilion sits on Bordeaux's Right Bank, where merlot dominates rather than cabernet sauvignon. This creates wines that are typically more approachable and fruit-forward compared to the structured, tannic Left Bank styles from Médoc and Graves. The clay-limestone soils of Saint-Emilion are perfectly suited to merlot, producing wines with softer tannins and earlier drinking pleasure while still maintaining excellent ageing potential.

Château Capet Duverger exemplifies how modern cooperatives can produce exceptional wines by pooling resources and expertise. The gravity-flow winery and careful oak programme demonstrate that co-ops now invest in premium facilities previously only available to wealthy estates. This collaborative approach allows smaller growers to access advanced winemaking techniques while maintaining strict quality standards, proving that great wine isn't exclusively the domain of prestigious châteaux.

The restrained use of new oak allows the fruit character to shine while adding subtle complexity. New French oak imparts vanilla and caramel notes along with gentle spice, but at only 20% it won't overpower the wine's natural plum and blackberry flavours. The 12-month maturation period provides enough time for the oak to integrate smoothly, creating texture and structure without the aggressive woody character that can dominate wines aged in 100% new barrels.

This wine showcases the modern Right Bank style that's designed for both immediate enjoyment and cellaring. You can drink it now to appreciate its ripe fruit and approachable tannins, or cellar it for 5-10 years to develop more complex tertiary flavours. The 2020 vintage was excellent in Bordeaux, with ideal growing conditions producing wines with both power and elegance that will reward patient collectors.

The medium body and savoury complexity make this wine incredibly food-friendly. Classic pairings include roasted lamb, beef bourguignon, or aged cheeses, where the wine's plum fruit complements rich proteins. The earthy mushroom and leather notes also work beautifully with game birds or truffle dishes, while the wine's balanced acidity cuts through fatty foods without overwhelming delicate preparations.
