This Saint-Emilion Grand Cru is ripe, approachable, spicy and lengthy. Plum and blackberry lead the way with notes of leather, mushroom, vanilla and caramel adding complexity. Like many modern Right Bank Bordeaux, it can be enjoyed now or well into the future.

Why do we love this wine?

Château Capet Duverger is the perfect example of a co-op driven wine success story in France. This Grand Cru from Saint-Emilion is of course led by merlot with the remaining fruit being cabernet sauvignon. The grapes are fermented in a gravity-flow winery before being put to rest in 20% new French oak for 12 months. It’s ripe, approachable, spicy and lengthy. Plum and blackberry lead the way with notes of leather, mushroom, vanilla and caramel adding complexity. Like many of the more modern Right Bank wines, this can be enjoyed now, but would also benefit from more time in the cellar.

Frequently Asked Questions

As a Right Bank Bordeaux, this Saint-Emilion is merlot-driven rather than cabernet sauvignon-led like Left Bank wines. The clay-limestone soils of Saint-Emilion produce wines that are generally more approachable in youth, with softer tannins and richer fruit flavours. This modern style allows you to enjoy it now while still having excellent cellaring potential, unlike many Left Bank wines that require years of patience.

Château Capet Duverger exemplifies how French cooperatives can produce exceptional wines by pooling resources and expertise. The gravity-flow winery and careful oak regime (20% new French oak for 12 months) demonstrate the technical precision possible when small growers combine their efforts. This collaborative approach often results in better value wines that maintain traditional quality standards while benefiting from shared modern equipment and knowledge.

The wine's combination of ripe plum and blackberry with earthy leather and mushroom notes makes it ideal for rich, savoury dishes. Try it with duck confit, beef bourguignon, or aged hard cheeses where the wine's spicy length and vanilla-caramel oak will complement rather than compete. The medium body and approachable tannins also pair beautifully with roasted lamb or wild game dishes.

The 2020 shows the modern Right Bank style of being delicious upon release while offering excellent aging potential. You can enjoy its vibrant fruit and spicy character now, but cellaring for 5-10 years will allow the tannins to integrate further and develop more complex tertiary flavours. The 90-point James Suckling rating suggests this vintage has the structure and balance for extended aging.

Saint-Emilion Grand Cru represents the entry level of the appellation's quality hierarchy, above basic Saint-Emilion but below Grand Cru Classé. Wines must meet stricter production standards including lower yields, higher alcohol minimums, and longer aging requirements. While not as prestigious as the classified growths, Grand Cru wines like this often represent excellent value, offering authentic Right Bank character at accessible prices.
