Why do we love this wine?

Big, juicy, intense and adored by critics and customers alike. It’s fully dense with a complex palate of cherry, plum, chocolate, mocha, menthol and spice. A beautiful graphite edge finishes it off thanks to 18 months in a mix of new and older oak. And there’s a surprisingly creamy, plush aspect as well, giving this red something so rarely found in Bordeaux - a refreshing side. We’re never one to argue with James Suckling, so check out his review below.

Frequently Asked Questions

St-Emilion Grand Cru represents the prestigious classification system of Bordeaux's Right Bank, where this wine must meet strict quality standards including lower yields and longer ageing requirements. The 'La Grave' vineyard benefits from St-Emilion's unique terroir of limestone and clay soils, which are particularly suited to Merlot-based blends. This classification ensures you're getting a wine that's been rigorously evaluated and approved by French wine authorities, making it a step above standard Bordeaux appellations.

The combination of new and older oak barrels creates a sophisticated layering effect - new oak contributes the chocolate, mocha, and vanilla notes while older barrels allow the fruit characteristics to shine through without overwhelming them. This mixed approach explains the wine's complex palate that balances intensity with elegance. The graphite edge mentioned in the tasting notes is a classic signature of well-integrated oak, particularly from French barrels, which adds mineral complexity without masking the terroir-driven fruit flavours.

Traditional Bordeaux reds, especially from prestigious appellations, are often known for their structured, tannic, and sometimes austere character that requires years to soften. This wine's creamy, plush texture and refreshing quality suggests excellent fruit ripeness and skilled winemaking that has tamed the tannins early. The certified organic farming practices likely contribute to this approachability, as organic viticulture often produces grapes with better natural balance and less harsh extraction during winemaking.

The wine's textured, savoury profile with notes of plum, cedar, and allspice makes it ideal for roasted meats like lamb or beef with herb crusts, where the cedar and spice elements will complement the seasoning. The medium body and plush texture also pair beautifully with duck confit or mushroom-based dishes, as the earthy undertones won't overpower more delicate flavours. Aged cheeses like Roquefort or Camembert will highlight the wine's creamy aspects while the fruit intensity can stand up to rich, flavourful preparations.

The 2018 Bordeaux vintage is widely regarded as exceptional, producing wines with both immediate appeal and long-term ageing potential. Given the wine's already plush, approachable character and the fact it's receiving critical acclaim now, it's certainly enjoyable today and will continue to develop complexity over the next 8-12 years. The organic farming and careful oak integration suggest this wine has been crafted for both current pleasure and future evolution, so whether you drink it now or cellar it depends on your preference for fresh fruit intensity versus developed tertiary flavours.
