Why do we love this wine?

We’re getting pretty good at finding exceptional Bordeaux at unbelievable pricing. Humble, I know. But sometimes it’s good to give yourself a little pat on the back. We think we earned it with this one. It’s Saint-Emilion Grand Cru composed of 85% merlot and 15% cab franc that’s hitting all the right notes. And we’re not the only ones that feel that way. A score of 4.2 on Vivino and 96 points with a gold medal from the Decanter World Wine Awards seem to back up our assessment. The Decanter review below goes into a bit more detail for those remaining unconvinced.

Ripe black cherry, blueberry, cedar and cinnamon on the nose. Full bodied with fine grained ripe tannins. Cabernet Franc helps to give some refreshing acidity that balances the depth of fruit concentration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Saint-Emilion Grand Cru represents the prestigious classification system of Bordeaux's Right Bank, where merlot-dominant blends showcase elegance and finesse. This particular wine's 85% merlot and 15% cabernet franc composition creates a more approachable style than Left Bank Bordeaux, with softer tannins and earlier drinking potential. The Grand Cru designation ensures strict quality standards including lower yields and longer ageing requirements. The 96-point Decanter World Wine Awards score with gold medal recognition confirms this wine punches well above its weight class.

The 2018 vintage in Bordeaux is widely regarded as exceptional, delivering wines with perfect balance between power and elegance. This vintage benefited from ideal weather conditions - a warm, dry summer followed by cool nights that preserved acidity while allowing full phenolic ripeness. For merlot-based wines like this Saint-Emilion, 2018 produced fruit with concentrated flavours of plum and dark berries, while maintaining the variety's characteristic smoothness. The vintage's natural balance means this wine can be enjoyed now but will continue developing complexity over the next decade.

The medium-bodied profile and textured, savoury character make this wine incredibly food-friendly, particularly with dishes that complement merlot's natural affinity for rich, umami flavours. Classic pairings include roasted lamb with herbs, duck confit, or aged cheeses like comté or gruyère. The cedar and allspice notes work beautifully with mushroom-based dishes or slow-cooked beef bourguignon. The wine's elegant structure won't overpower lighter proteins like pork tenderloin or even salmon with a red wine reduction.

While this 2018 Saint-Emilion is drinking beautifully now, showing its plum fruit and spice complexity, it has the structure to age gracefully for another 8-12 years. Merlot-based Bordeaux typically reach their peak drinking window 5-15 years after vintage, and this wine's Grand Cru pedigree suggests excellent ageing potential. The cedar notes will become more pronounced with time, while the fruit will evolve from fresh plum to more complex dried fruit and leather characteristics. If cellaring, store at 12-15°C in a dark environment with consistent humidity.

Bordeaux's reputation often means paying premium prices, but Right Bank appellations like Saint-Emilion can offer outstanding quality-to-price ratios compared to famous Left Bank châteaux. This wine's 96-point professional rating and gold medal recognition typically indicate wines costing significantly more from prestigious producers. The combination of Grand Cru classification, exceptional vintage, and critical acclaim creates a rare opportunity to experience top-tier Bordeaux quality. Small producers like Château Hauts de Granget often focus purely on winemaking excellence rather than marketing, passing savings directly to consumers.
