Why do we love this wine?

As Saint-Émilion’s next door neighbour, Castillon offers value that is almost unparalleled in Bordeaux. From the ridge of limestone soil that produces the most sought after wines on the right bank, the ‘Rocheuses’ is a recognition of how magnificent Bordeaux doesn’t have to come with the price tag. This blend is majority merlot (80%), with cabernet franc in support to make a drop that truly sings. If you’re into the details, here they are: seperately fermented parcels in stainless steel, before 12 months ageing in 20% new oak barrels, 40% first use, and 40% second use. Now, let’s crack a bottle? Intense notes of mulberry and blackcurrant, some cured meat, maybe a touch of smoky, toasty oak in there too. Savoury, inky, and more-ish. Our only complaint is that the bottle is finished already.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the nose sings of freshly crushed black cherries, blackberries and mulberries with suggestions of Marmite toast, smoked meats and cast-iron pan plus a waft of cracked black pepper. Full-bodied, the palate delivers bags of ripe, juicy black fruits with a sturdy frame of grainy tannins, finishing with appealing freshness and with plenty of minerals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Castillon sits on the same prestigious limestone ridge as Saint-Émilion, sharing similar terroir that produces exceptional right bank wines. However, as Saint-Émilion's lesser-known neighbour, Castillon hasn't achieved the same fame or price premiums, making it one of Bordeaux's best-kept secrets for quality-conscious wine lovers. This geological advantage combined with lower land prices allows producers like Château Le Rey to craft wines with Saint-Émilion character at a fraction of the cost.

The careful oak programme uses a mix of 20% new barrels, 40% first-use, and 40% second-use French oak over 12 months, creating complexity without overwhelming the fruit. New oak contributes those subtle smoky, toasty notes you'll detect, while the used barrels allow the merlot's natural mulberry and blackcurrant flavours to shine through. This balanced approach is typical of quality Bordeaux winemaking, where oak should enhance rather than dominate the wine's character.

Merlot thrives on Bordeaux's right bank limestone and clay soils, producing wines with rich, velvety textures and approachable tannins. At 80% of this blend, merlot provides the wine's full-bodied structure and those intense dark fruit flavours, while the supporting cabernet franc adds aromatic lift and spicy complexity. This combination is classic for the region and creates wines that are both powerful and elegant, drinking beautifully in their youth while having potential to age gracefully.

The wine's savoury, inky character and cured meat notes make it perfect for red meat dishes like grilled lamb, beef bourguignon, or aged steaks. The full body and structured tannins can handle rich, fatty foods, while the mulberry and blackcurrant fruit complements game meats beautifully. For cheese lovers, try it with aged hard cheeses like mature cheddar or comté, where the wine's complexity can match the cheese's depth of flavour.

The 2019 vintage is drinking beautifully now, showing excellent integration between fruit, oak, and tannins after several years of bottle development. While Bordeaux wines often benefit from cellaring, this Castillon's approachable style and quality winemaking mean it's hitting its stride perfectly for current enjoyment. That said, well-stored bottles could continue developing for another 5-8 years, potentially gaining more tertiary complexity and further softening of tannins.
