Why do we love this wine?

Welcome to the new vintage of Château Sixtine, our most popular Châteauneuf-du-Pape ever!

Head Buyer John Clark describes it as ‘one of the best wines I’ve ever bought’ and multiple vintages later, we’re standing by it. Nobody’s going home disappointed with this. It’s generous and rich, but amazingly approachable at the same time. We’d recommend you decant this- or just pop the cork and let it breathe for a few hours. When something offers this much depth and nuance, it’s the best course of action to make sure you’re getting all that you can from your glass. Crack a couple of bottles this year, a couple in five, and a couple in ten. If you’re like us and buy big, you might even have some more for the next decade. Go for a meaty roast with this, and all your worries will fade away.

The grand vin of the estate is the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Château Sixtine, which checks in as 55% Grenache, 25% Syrah, and 20% Mourvèdre. It too is deep ruby/purple-hued and offers a spicy, peppery, red and black-fruited style that carries medium to full-bodied richness, ripe, polished tannins, wonderful mid-palate depth, and a great finish. This seriously impressive 2020 is going to deliver the goods over the coming 10-15 years.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Château Sixtine represents the pinnacle of Châteauneuf-du-Pape craftsmanship, earning recognition as our most popular CDP ever and a 95-point rating from Jeb Dunnuck. The wine achieves that rare balance of being both generous and rich while remaining remarkably approachable - a quality that sets it apart from many age-worthy Châteauneuf-du-Papes that can be austere in their youth. The GSM blend showcases the terroir's ability to produce wines with immediate pleasure yet decades of ageing potential.

Decanting is highly recommended to unlock the wine's full complexity, though simply opening the bottle and letting it breathe for several hours will also work beautifully. The 2020 vintage benefits from this aeration as it allows the layered flavours of black cherry, plum, and allspice to fully integrate and express themselves. Serve at cellar temperature (around 16-18°C) alongside rich, meaty dishes like roast lamb or beef, which complement the wine's full-bodied character and enhance its savoury elements.

GSM stands for Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre - the holy trinity of Southern Rhône winemaking and the backbone of great Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Grenache provides the wine's generous fruit character and approachability, Syrah contributes structure and spice (evident in those allspice notes), while Mourvèdre adds depth, complexity, and ageing potential. This blend is perfectly suited to the region's warm Mediterranean climate and diverse soils, creating wines that are both powerful and elegant.

This 2020 vintage is designed for both immediate enjoyment and long-term cellaring, with a drinking window spanning at least two decades. The wine's structure and balance suggest it will continue developing complexity through 2030-2035, with the fruit flavours evolving into more tertiary notes of leather, earth, and herbs. Following the recommended approach of opening bottles at different intervals - some now, some in five years, and others in ten - will showcase how beautifully this wine transforms over time.

The 2020 vintage in Châteauneuf-du-Pape benefited from ideal growing conditions that produced wines of exceptional concentration and balance. This vintage showcases the perfect marriage of ripe fruit character with the region's signature mineral complexity, resulting in wines that are both immediately appealing and built for the long haul. The combination of warm, dry conditions and cool nights allowed for optimal flavour development while maintaining the natural acidity that gives these wines their remarkable ageing potential and food-pairing versatility.
