Why do we love this wine?

Château Thibeaud-Maillet is a tiny vineyard (less than 2 hectares!) located in Pomerol, just 400 meters from the iconic Château Petrus, and was founded in the 1800s by the Thiebault family. Their vineyards are dedicated to merlot with vine age ranging from 25 to 50 years old. A hand harvest leads to time in 50% new French oak. The resulting wine is rich and elegant, expressing blackcurrant, leather, pencil shavings and floral notes. Spice and minerality drive the finish, making for an enjoyable Bordeaux that more than hints at its famous neighbour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Château Thibeaud-Maillet's tiny 2-hectare vineyard sits just 400 metres from the legendary Château Petrus, sharing similar terroir that produces some of the world's most coveted wines. The estate's old merlot vines (25-50 years) and meticulous hand-harvesting create wines with remarkable concentration and complexity. This proximity to Pomerol's most famous château, combined with traditional winemaking methods, delivers exceptional quality that punches well above its modest size.

The careful use of 50% new French oak allows the wine's natural merlot fruit to shine while adding subtle complexity through cedar and pencil shaving notes. This balanced approach prevents the oak from overwhelming the wine's inherent elegance, instead creating a harmonious marriage between fruit and wood. The remaining 50% in older barrels preserves the wine's freshness and allows the Pomerol terroir to express itself authentically.

Pomerol's clay-rich soils with iron deposits create ideal conditions for merlot, which thrives in cooler, moisture-retentive earth. This terroir produces merlot with exceptional depth and mineral complexity, quite different from the variety's expression in warmer climates. The combination of old vines and Pomerol's distinctive soil composition results in wines with remarkable concentration, silky tannins, and the signature elegance that makes this appellation so revered among Bordeaux enthusiasts.

The wine's medium body and savoury character make it ideal for rich, earthy dishes like duck confit, lamb with herbs, or aged beef with mushroom sauces. The allspice and cedar notes pair beautifully with game meats and dishes featuring rosemary or thyme. For cheese pairings, try aged hard cheeses like Comté or Parmigiano-Reggiano, which complement the wine's mineral finish and enhance its complex flavour profile.

The 2018 vintage in Bordeaux is considered exceptional, with ideal weather conditions producing wines of remarkable balance and aging potential. This vintage benefited from a warm, dry summer that allowed perfect ripening while maintaining freshness and acidity. For Pomerol specifically, 2018 delivered wines with excellent structure and concentration, making this Château Thibeaud-Maillet a prime example of how smaller producers excelled in this outstanding vintage year.
