This is classic Pomerol here. Full of power but driven by fruit, it opens with blackberry and black cherry. There’s floral notes as well, along with cassis, graphite and spice from the 50% new oak.

Why do we love this wine?

You’ll find refinement, elegance and grace in the wine, one that opens up nicely with a bit of air. This is that rare Bordeaux that can be enjoyed now, but will certainly age wonderfully for up to two decades. Check out Jeb Dunnuck’s beautifully written review below.

Pure, modern notes of cassis, spicy oak, leaf pencil, and dried violets emerge from the 2019 Château Tour Maillet (Lagardere). Medium to full-bodied, this beauty has a wonderfully pure, elegant texture, nicely integrated acidity, and outstanding length. It's in the same class as the 2018 and is a beautiful wine in the making.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pomerol is Bordeaux's smallest and most exclusive appellation, renowned for its clay and gravel soils that produce exceptionally elegant Merlot-based wines. Unlike other Bordeaux regions that rely heavily on Cabernet Sauvignon, Pomerol's iron-rich clay creates wines with remarkable finesse and silky textures. The region's limited production and proximity to legendary estates like Pétrus make every Pomerol bottle a coveted treasure among collectors.

This 2019 Pomerol represents the sweet spot of Bordeaux drinking - it's approachable now but will reward patience with up to two decades of cellaring. The vintage benefited from excellent growing conditions, producing wines with both immediate charm and long-term aging potential. For optimal enjoyment, consider drinking one bottle now to appreciate its youthful fruit, then cellar the remaining bottles for 5-10 years when the tannins will fully integrate.

Full-bodied Bordeaux wines like this Pomerol contain complex tannin structures and concentrated flavours that benefit significantly from aeration. When first opened, the wine's components may seem tight or closed, but exposure to oxygen allows the black cherry and plum notes to emerge while softening the cedar undertones. Decanting for 30-60 minutes or simply opening the bottle an hour before serving will reveal the wine's true elegance and textural complexity.

The wine's savoury, textured profile and full body make it ideal for rich, umami-driven dishes that complement its black cherry and cedar characteristics. Think roasted lamb with herbs, aged beef steaks, or duck confit where the wine's plum notes can harmonise with the meat's richness. The cedar undertones also pair beautifully with mushroom-based dishes or aged cheeses, creating sophisticated flavour bridges between the wine and food.

A 4.1 rating on Vivino places this Pomerol in the 'excellent' category, reflecting both critical acclaim and consumer satisfaction from thousands of wine drinkers worldwide. This score is particularly impressive for a Bordeaux wine, as the platform's users tend to be discerning about French classics. The rating validates the wine's balance of immediate approachability and aging potential, confirming it delivers the refinement and elegance that Pomerol is famous for.
