Why do we love this wine?

You can’t shop for great Bordeaux in a wine store. Well, you can try - nothing is impossible - but the highly pointed gems, like Château Tronquoy-Lalande sell out far too quickly, and often well in advance or ‘en primeur’ months before it’s even hit our shores. We discovered this beauty on a recent wine-buying trip to France, and get this: almost immediately upon it hitting our lips, even before knowing any details about the Château, we knew it over-delivered in quality. Those ‘aha’ moments happen, and when they do, you want to jump up and down. Are you a French wine-loving ‘mofo? Fantastique! You are going to love this classy rouge.

Four famous grape varieties are used to make the premium blend. Merlot, cabernet sauvignon, petit verdot and cabernet franc. Every year, the unique blend is different, but they all have a particular role to play to bring together density, aroma, flavour and a beautiful feathery long length to best reflect the style of the Château and the excellent vintage. The symphonious dance of tobacco, French oak resin, blackcurrant and liquorice aromas all combine to give this deep Bordeaux a distinctive personality, worthy of a dinner in a ‘James Bond’ tuxedo. Super classy.

DWWA

Powerful aromas of cassis, graphite and coffee framed by creamy oak and leathery undertones. Dense, mouth filling and very serious wine, with grand fruit intensity and well-layered firm tannins with a solid structure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Saint-Estèphe is the northernmost appellation in the Left Bank's Médoc, known for producing some of Bordeaux's most structured and age-worthy wines. The cooler climate and gravel-clay soils create wines with exceptional tannin structure and mineral complexity. This Château Tronquoy-Lalande exemplifies the appellation's signature style with its full-bodied profile, combining power with elegance in a way that distinguishes it from the softer Pomerol or more austere Pauillac styles.

The 2018 vintage was exceptional in Bordeaux, producing wines with both immediate appeal and long-term ageing potential. While this wine is drinking beautifully now, showing its tobacco and blackcurrant complexity, it will continue to evolve and improve for another 15-20 years. The petit verdot in the blend adds structure for extended ageing, whilst the merlot provides approachable fruit in its youth. For optimal enjoyment, consider cellaring until 2026-2028 when the tannins will have softened further.

The wine's textured, savoury profile and notes of cedar, allspice, and plum make it ideal for rich, protein-heavy dishes. Classic pairings include roasted lamb with herbs, aged beef steaks, or game meats like venison. The French oak influence and liquorice notes also complement strong cheeses like aged Roquefort or Comté. For a modern twist, try it with duck confit or mushroom-based dishes that echo the wine's earthy, savoury character.

The exceptional scores (97pts DWWA, 96pts Jeb Dunnuck, 95pts Wine Advocate) reflect both the outstanding 2018 vintage and Château Tronquoy-Lalande's winemaking excellence. The 2018 growing season provided ideal conditions with a warm, dry summer followed by perfect harvest weather, allowing for optimal phenolic ripeness. Critics praised the wine's seamless integration of four grape varieties, creating complexity without sacrificing elegance. The château's commitment to expressing terroir through careful vineyard management and selective harvesting clearly resonated with professional tasters.

The combination of merlot, cabernet sauvignon, petit verdot, and cabernet franc represents a sophisticated approach to Bordeaux blending, with each variety contributing distinct characteristics. Merlot provides the plush fruit and approachability, cabernet sauvignon adds structure and cassis notes, whilst petit verdot contributes colour, spice, and tannin backbone for ageing. Cabernet franc brings aromatic complexity and herbal nuances. This quartet creates what the winemaker describes as a 'symphonious dance', allowing vintage-specific adjustments whilst maintaining the château's distinctive house style.
