This is a seriously good deal on a seriously smart wine. With 95 points from West Australian aficionado Ray Jordan, it has certainly earned its stripes. "50% new French oak, immutably plum fruit shines through"

Why do we love this wine?

There is spice and richness, tomato leaf and earth, tobacco and cocoa, and... well there's lots going on! Mesmerising and imposing, it's medium bodied but generous, richly fruited but finessed. 18 months in 50% new French oak has given the wine real grunt and another layer of complexity, but it's the presence of still-fresh red and black fruit that's bewitched me.

Frequently Asked Questions

Margaret River's unique maritime climate and gravelly soils create Cabernet Sauvignons with exceptional elegance and complexity. This 2018 Estate bottling showcases the region's ability to produce wines that balance power with finesse, displaying the characteristic herbaceous notes like tomato leaf alongside rich fruit. The 18-month French oak maturation adds structure while preserving the fresh fruit character that Margaret River is renowned for.

The careful use of 50% new French oak for 18 months adds significant complexity without overwhelming the fruit. French oak contributes subtle vanilla, spice, and tannin structure while allowing the wine's natural tobacco and cocoa notes to shine through. This balanced approach creates what's described as 'real grunt' - adding backbone and aging potential while maintaining the wine's medium-bodied elegance and fresh fruit expression.

The wine's savoury profile with tobacco, earth, and allspice notes makes it ideal for rich, umami-driven dishes. Think grilled lamb with rosemary, aged beef steaks, or mushroom-based dishes that complement the earthy undertones. The medium body and balanced tannins also pair beautifully with hard cheeses or charcuterie, where the wine's complexity can interact with the food's savoury elements.

The exceptional scores of 95 and 94 points reflect the wine's remarkable complexity and balance achieved in the 2018 vintage. Critics recognised the seamless integration of multiple flavour layers - from fresh fruit to earthy complexity - without any single element dominating. The wine demonstrates textbook Margaret River Cabernet characteristics while showing the producer's skill in oak management and fruit selection, creating a wine that's both immediately appealing and built for long-term cellaring.

While already showing beautifully with its fresh red and black fruit character, this wine has the structure and complexity to evolve gracefully over the next 10-15 years. The French oak tannins and natural acidity will help preserve the fruit while allowing the earthy, tobacco, and cocoa notes to develop further. Drink now for vibrant fruit expression, or cellar until 2030-2035 for maximum complexity and integration of all flavour components.
