Wow. Pretty much what making wine in this country is all about. An iron fist in a velvet glove. There's a reason the name carries so much weight.

Why do we love this wine?

The 2017 vintage brought near on perfect growing conditions to Hilltops: sun when you want it, rain when you need it. The terroir naturally provides complexity and elegance, but the power and longevity of this wine can only be attained with restrained and considered winemaking - something Clonakilla have in spades. Bright red and blue fruit, peppery spice and velvety tannins all wrapped around a backbone of lively acid and sweet oak leave the drinker wanting for nothing, except, perhaps another glass. Share it with those you love, or drink it in front of those you don't - this is one to show off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hilltops is a cool-climate region in New South Wales that sits at high altitude, creating ideal conditions for elegant Shiraz with natural complexity. The terroir here allows grapes to ripen slowly while retaining bright acidity, resulting in wines that balance power with finesse. This elevation and climate combination is why Clonakilla's Hilltops Shiraz shows such distinctive peppery spice characteristics alongside its rich fruit flavours.

The 2017 vintage was exceptional across Australia, with Hilltops experiencing near-perfect growing conditions of timely sunshine and rainfall. This vintage produced Shiraz wines with outstanding balance between concentration and elegance, which is reflected in the multiple high ratings this wine received. The ideal weather allowed for optimal phenolic ripeness while preserving the natural acidity that gives this wine its longevity potential.

This rich, oaky Shiraz with its blackberry and redcurrant flavours pairs beautifully with grilled red meats, especially lamb with rosemary or beef with peppercorn sauce. The wine's velvety tannins and peppery spice also complement game meats like venison or duck. For cheese lovers, try it with aged hard cheeses or blue cheese, where the wine's structure can stand up to strong flavours while the fruit sweetness provides balance.

The multiple high ratings, including 94+ points from Campbell Mattinson and recognition from James Suckling, reflect Clonakilla's reputation as an iconic producer with restrained winemaking techniques. The scores recognise the wine's perfect balance of power and elegance, showcasing how skilled viticulture and winemaking can express terroir authentically. These ratings also acknowledge the wine's aging potential and the complexity achieved through careful oak integration and natural acidity preservation.

This full-bodied Shiraz from the excellent 2017 vintage has the structure and balance for long-term cellaring, likely drinking beautifully for 10-15 years from vintage. The combination of bright acidity, velvety tannins, and sweet oak provides the framework for graceful aging, where the peppery spice will integrate further and secondary flavours will develop. While delicious now, it will reward patience as the wine evolves and gains complexity over the next decade.
