Intensely dense, which sounds just as smooth as it drinks. A beauty with longevity aplenty.

Why do we love this wine?

A special series wine from a prominent McLaren Vale winery isn’t something that’s easy to get our hands on. And we mean, sometimes this stuff can’t even be picked up when you bang on the doors of wineries themselves. So, safe to say we were jumping for joy to land this beauty from Curtis. Intensely dense, which sounds just as smooth as it drinks. Heightened aromas of blackcurrant and black cherries waft enticingly from the decanter, which helps open this wine to its full potential. The oak influence is superbly balanced, helping to lift the marked quality of the fruit and give this beauty the longevity it deserves.

Sometimes you say we spoil you mofos, and we’re starting to think that you’re right.

The impact of incredible quality oak in undeniable on the nose, however the way it folds into the textured plum and black cherry fruit on the palate is seamless; tannins are fine and firm as is the acidity but in near perfect balance with the drive and influence of the fruit. The finish has a touch of leather to textured black fruits and lingering spice. Will live a long time.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is a special series wine from a prominent McLaren Vale winery that's notoriously hard to source, even directly from the winery itself. Curtis produces limited quantities of their premium wines, making them highly sought after by collectors and wine enthusiasts. The exclusivity stems from their commitment to quality over quantity, using only the finest fruit from their Martin's Vineyard site.

Decanting allows the intensely dense structure of this full-bodied Shiraz to open up and reveal its complete aromatic profile. The process helps separate any sediment that may have formed during bottle ageing and provides essential aeration to soften the tannins. Given the wine's concentrated nature and oak influence, decanting for 30-60 minutes will enhance the blackcurrant and black cherry aromas significantly.

With scores of 97 points from Wine Orbit and 96 points from both Patrick Eckel and Wine Pilot, this Shiraz represents exceptional value in the premium wine category. These consistently high ratings across multiple respected critics indicate outstanding winemaking and fruit quality. Such unanimous acclaim is rare and suggests this wine will age gracefully for years to come.

The rich, full-bodied profile with chocolate, plum, and vanilla notes makes this wine perfect for hearty red meat dishes like grilled lamb or beef steaks. The balanced oak influence complements barbecued meats beautifully, while the wine's intensity can stand up to strong flavoured cheeses and dark chocolate desserts. McLaren Vale Shiraz traditionally pairs excellently with Mediterranean herbs and robust sauces.

The superbly balanced oak influence and marked fruit quality give this wine excellent ageing potential, likely developing beautifully over the next 8-12 years. The 2020 vintage benefits from McLaren Vale's exceptional growing conditions, producing wines with both immediate appeal and long-term cellaring prospects. Proper storage in a cool, dark environment will allow the complex flavours to integrate and evolve into even greater sophistication.
