Why do we love this wine?

A special series wine from a prominent McLaren Vale winery isn’t something that’s easy to get our hands on. And we mean, sometimes this stuff can’t even be picked up when you bang on the doors of wineries themselves. So, safe to say we were jumping for joy to land this beauty from Curtis. Intensely dense, which sounds just as smooth as it drinks. Heightened aromas of blackcurrant and black cherries waft enticingly from the decanter, which helps open this wine to its full potential. The oak influence is superbly balanced, helping to lift the marked quality of the fruit and give this beauty the longevity it deserves.

Sometimes you say we spoil you mofos, and we’re starting to think that you’re right.

The impact of incredible quality oak in undeniable on the nose, however the way it folds into the textured plum and black cherry fruit on the palate is seamless; tannins are fine and firm as is the acidity but in near perfect balance with the drive and influence of the fruit. The finish has a touch of leather to textured black fruits and lingering spice. Will live a long time.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is part of Curtis's special series collection, which means it represents their premium tier above standard releases. McLaren Vale is renowned for producing some of Australia's most powerful Shiraz, and this wine showcases the region's ability to create intensely concentrated fruit flavours while maintaining elegance. The careful oak integration and exceptional critic scores (including 97 points from Wine Orbit) demonstrate the winemaker's skill in crafting a wine that balances McLaren Vale's characteristic richness with refined structure.

The description specifically mentions this wine has 'the longevity it deserves,' which is typical of premium McLaren Vale Shiraz. Given the intense density, balanced oak, and full-bodied structure, this 2020 vintage should develop beautifully over the next 8-12 years. The chocolate, plum, and vanilla flavours will integrate further, while the tannins soften to reveal more complex secondary characteristics. However, it's drinking superbly now if you prefer the vibrant primary fruit expression.

Decanting serves two crucial purposes for this full-bodied Shiraz. First, it allows the wine to breathe and open up, which is essential for dense, concentrated wines like this one to fully express their aromatic potential. Second, the aeration helps soften any firm tannins and allows the blackcurrant and black cherry aromas to become more pronounced. For a wine of this calibre and intensity, decanting for 30-60 minutes before serving will significantly enhance your tasting experience.

The rich, full-bodied profile with chocolate, plum, and vanilla notes makes this wine perfect for robust dishes. Think grilled lamb with rosemary, beef brisket, or aged hard cheeses like aged cheddar or Parmigiano-Reggiano. The wine's intensity can also complement barbecued meats with smoky flavours, while the vanilla notes from oak aging pair beautifully with dishes featuring herbs like thyme or oregano. Dark chocolate desserts would also complement the wine's natural chocolate characteristics.

Receiving 97 points from Wine Orbit and 96 points from both Patrick Eckel and Wine Pilot indicates this is an exceptional wine that punches well above typical price points. These scores place it in the 'outstanding' category, suggesting remarkable complexity, balance, and aging potential. The consistency across multiple respected critics demonstrates that this isn't just one person's opinion - it's a genuinely superior wine that showcases both the terroir of McLaren Vale and the winemaker's expertise in crafting premium Shiraz.
