Why do we love this wine?

Deeply rich. Deeply concentrated. Round, rustic, earthy, pure fruited. Blackberry compote and quince, red and (classically Vale) blue fruits. A luscious mouthfeel framed by the deployment of quality oak. Sweet smoke and vanilla unfurl in the glass. Ripe fruit that never delves into being over-ripe or jammy, it sits poised on the edge retaining freshness and zeal. Let it breathe and it will offer more and more, this wine was still evolving as we emptied the very last drop. Certifiably and unequivocally bloody delicious.

Frequently Asked Questions

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and ancient geological soils create Shiraz with exceptional concentration and complexity. The region's proximity to the ocean moderates temperatures, allowing grapes to ripen slowly while retaining natural acidity. This Curtis 'Pasha' exemplifies the Vale's signature style with its deep fruit concentration, earthy undertones, and ability to balance power with elegance. The terroir contributes to those classic 'blue fruit' characteristics mentioned in the tasting notes, which are hallmarks of premium McLaren Vale Shiraz.

Decant this wine 1-2 hours before serving to allow it to breathe and fully express its complex aromatics. Serve at 16-18°C in large Bordeaux-style glasses to concentrate the rich bouquet of blackberry, vanilla, and sweet smoke. The wine's full-bodied nature and quality oak integration make it perfect for pairing with grilled red meats, aged cheeses, or rich game dishes. Given its evolving nature in the glass, pour smaller amounts initially and let guests experience how it opens up over time.

Receiving 96 points from multiple respected critics like Winestate, Wine Orbit, and Natalie Maclean indicates this is an exceptional wine that represents outstanding value and craftsmanship. Scores in the 95-96 range typically denote wines with remarkable complexity, perfect balance, and aging potential. The consistency across different critics suggests the wine displays universal appeal and technical excellence. These ratings place the Curtis 'Pasha' in the top tier of Australian Shiraz, competing with wines often costing significantly more.

This 2018 Shiraz is drinking beautifully now, showing excellent integration between fruit, oak, and tannins. However, given its concentration and structure, it has excellent cellaring potential for 8-12 years. The wine's ability to continue evolving in the glass suggests it will develop additional complexity with proper storage. If drinking now, the rich fruit and vanilla notes are at their peak, while cellaring will allow the earthy, rustic characters to emerge more prominently and the tannins to soften further.

The 'rustic' character refers to earthy, mineral-driven flavours that connect the wine to its terroir rather than being overly polished or manipulated. In this Curtis Shiraz, it manifests as subtle forest floor, dried herb, and mineral notes that complement the rich fruit without overwhelming it. This rustic quality is highly prized in premium wines as it indicates authentic expression of place and traditional winemaking techniques. It's what prevents the wine from being jammy or over-ripe, maintaining that crucial balance between power and elegance that defines great McLaren Vale Shiraz.
