Sometimes we get a wine across the tasting bench at mofo HQ that doesn't need a lot of scrutiny. Not because we've passed it up, but because it just nails the stylistic qualities we're looking for. This is one of those wines. Not only exceptional value, this delicious drop shows the black and red fruit forward, lifted style we love, with plenty of structure and acidity all in balance. One of the best-value finds of the year!

Why do we love this wine?

Château Grand Sorillon sits on the renowned Pomerol plateau, covering 5.5 hectares in a single, continuous parcel. The vineyard's clay, gravelly soil holds moisture well, without becoming too sodden - leading to excellent grape growth and consistency. Planted to Merlot, with. some Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, the 40+ year old vineyard produces wines of exceptional quality and complexity.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Pomerol plateau is one of Bordeaux's most prestigious terroirs, renowned for producing some of the world's finest Merlot-based wines. Château Grand Sorillon benefits from the plateau's unique clay and gravel soils that provide excellent water retention without waterlogging, creating ideal conditions for grape ripening. This terroir, combined with the vineyard's 40+ year old vines, contributes to the wine's exceptional complexity and the concentrated fruit flavours of cherry, cranberry, and plum.

The 2023 vintage has earned a 'Dangerous Value' rating of 90 points, indicating exceptional quality at its price point. Bordeaux 2023 was a challenging vintage that required skilled winemaking, and estates like Château Grand Sorillon that successfully navigated the conditions are offering wines that punch well above their weight. The combination of prime Pomerol plateau fruit, mature vineyard plantings, and careful vintage management delivers complexity typically found in much more expensive Bordeaux wines.

This medium-bodied Cabernet blend with its cherry and plum notes pairs beautifully with classic French bistro fare like duck confit, lamb with herbs, or aged cheeses. The wine's Merlot-dominant blend and moderate tannin structure also complement roasted vegetables, mushroom dishes, and charcuterie. For a modern twist, try it with barbecued meats or even dark chocolate desserts, as the wine's fruit-forward profile bridges traditional and contemporary pairing approaches.

Mature vines of 40+ years develop extensive root systems that reach deep into the Pomerol plateau's clay-gravel soils, accessing mineral complexity and consistent water sources. These old vines naturally produce lower yields but higher concentration, resulting in more intense flavours and better vintage-to-vintage consistency. The vine age contributes to the wine's structural integrity and the depth behind those cherry, cranberry, and plum notes, creating a more sophisticated drinking experience than younger vineyard plantings could achieve.

Bordeaux Supérieur represents a step up from basic Bordeaux AOC, requiring stricter production standards including lower yields, higher minimum alcohol levels, and longer ageing requirements. Wines must be aged for at least 12 months before release, compared to basic Bordeaux which can be released earlier. This additional time allows for better integration of tannins and development of complexity, which explains why Château Grand Sorillon's Supérieur classification delivers such impressive depth and structure for its category.
